SKYPIXEL, one of the world’s most popular
aerial photography communities, has
announced the winners of its 2018 Aerial
Storytelling Contest, which it co-organises
with drone manufacturer DJI.
The 2018 contest attracted over 30,
entries from professional photographers,
videographers, enthusiasts and content
creators from over 141 countries. The
winning shot from the Photo Category was
taken by Deryk Baumgärtner, who used
his DJI Mavic Pro to capture a sun-bathed
monastery peeking out from behind fog. It
is framed by ribbons of water on Le Mont-
Saint-Michel in northern France.

Oh, the humanity
The British Journal of Photography, in partnership with Magnum
Photos, has revealed the 50 winners of its Portrait of Humanity
award. The winning portraits will be on a global tour from this
September to January 2020, and feature in a book, Portrait of
Humanity. See the images at bjp.photo/pohwinner.

Gives you wings (and software)
Software specialist Skylum has announced its participation in the
Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2019 competition, which recognises
the best sports and adventure photographs. Skylum is to provide
copies of Luminar 3 and signature presets to the 11 category
winners. See http://www.redbullillume.com/contest.

More aff ordable Pixel

3a camera phones
Google has announced the Pixel
3a and Pixel 3a XL, mid-range
versions of its flagship Pixel 3
and 3XL phones (sales of which
have been sluggish). They have
the same Sony 12.2MP rear
and 8MP front cameras as their
pricier brethren, along with the
well-received Portrait Mode
and Night Sight mode, but lack
the secondary, wideangle 8MP
camera on the front and the
Pixel Visual Core processor. The
Pixel 3a costs from £399, while
the 3a XL costs £469.

Laowa macro lens pricing
Laowa has revealed more details of its 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra Macro
APO lens, which will be available for Canon and Nikon DSLRs,
complete with auto aperture operation, as well as for the mirrorless
Sony FE mount. As opposed to the 1:1 (life-size) ratio found on most
macro lenses, it offers a 2:1 magnification ratio for capturing detail,
as shown in the sample photo above. The lens is available to
pre-order now for £469 from http://www.laowalens.co.uk.

Sony Alpha 7 III
still big in Japan
Japanese camera-sales data
recently published by BCN
reveals that Sony is holding
on to its dominance of the
mirrorless market over there.
The Sony A7 III appears to be
outselling all of Canon and
Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless
combined, despite the hoopla
over the newer Canon EOS R and
RP and Nikon Z 6 and Z 7. The
BCN report is in Japanese but
there is a selective translation
at bit.ly/bcnmirrorlessjapan.
