Thebookopenswitha seriesof shots
that only hint at the presence of people.
Thebeautifullyrenderedblack& white
framesseemonthesurfacetobe
mundanebutthemoreyoulookat them,
themorecaptivatingtheybecome.Only
thendowemeetthepeoplethatexist
there.Theywalk,smoke,fish.Theylive
withintheshadowsprovidedbythethick
foliage.Eachof themis lit byPape’s
artificiallight,a techniquethatmakes
theimagesseemallthestranger.
Butit’snotjustpeoplethatlivehere
- thereis wildlife,too.ThefirstthingI
thoughtof whenI flickedthroughthe
pageswasthefamousscenein Charles
Laughton’s 1955 filmTheNightof the
Hunter, wherethechildrendriftdownriver
ona boatwhilewatchedoverbythe
nocturnalanimalsthatlinetheriverbank.
Collectively,theimagesspeakabout
a spacewherepeople,animalsand
landscapeexistin harmony.Dyckman
Hazeis a fascinatingbook,onethat
demonstrateshowmalleablestreet
photographycanbe.It’swellworth
