The newtech nical regulations
originally plannedto com e
into effect next year willnow
be dela yed until 2022after
F1’s teams expressed concerns
over the economicimpactof
the COVID-19 pandemic. Ina
meeting held via conf erenc e
call, theten team principal s
with Chase Careyand Ross
Brawn,representingF1, and
FIA president Jean Todt
agreed toa fo rmat inwhichthe
current regulationsstan d, wit h
a development freezeon key
components such as chassis
and gearbo x.
Teams will now be
free to fo cus on their ne w
generationof cars during
2021 while working under the cost cap, whichwill still be
implemented next year. The agreement comesagainst a
backgroundof cancelled and/or postponed races, which
will entail a loss of income for all stakeholders, along
with economic uncertainty that will put a squeezeon
team income. The pand emic could force sponsors out of
business, or prompt them to scaleback theirspend, as
well as promptingthe car manu facturers involvedinF 1
to reconsider their commitment.
It’s understood thatFerrari was initiallyreluctant to
agree to th e delay but fell into line afterhigh-level internal
discussions. Team principal Mattia Binotto said: “It is
certainly not the time for selfishness and tactics.”
The teams withthe deepestpockets are well advanced
with their preparationsfor thenew ruleset. But the less
well-resourced competi tors were facinga sc enario in
which they would have to switchdevelopment focusto
the new-generation cars while the current ones we re ye t
to race. Enabling2020cars to race throug h tothe end of
2021, subjectto cont rols on deve lopment, will ease th e
financial pressure on someteams and ameliorate the costs
alreadysunk intothe 2020 machinery.
These measures will not be set in stoneuntil the details
have been workedthrough andrubber-stampedby the
World Motor Sport Council.

down for 21 consecutive days in March and April instead,
but it is surely now unrealistic to expect the roster ofthe
remaining 21 races to go ahead.
