Emotions ran high when it
was announced that the British
GP would nolonger alternate
between Silverstone and
Brands. Sadly, for supporters
of Brands at the 1986 race, this
banner had no effect and itwas
to be the last F1 race held there

Mayhemat the start of thelast
GP at Brands in1986. Thierry
Boutsenlost control ofhis USF&G-
sponsored Arrows andStefan
Johansson (Ferrari), in trying to
avoid him, collected the Ligier of
Jacques Laffite. Laffite was trapped
in his car for over half an hour,
where hewas aided by recently
qualified doctorJonathan Palmer,
driver of the damaged Zakspeed
(14) behind Boutsen’s car.The shunt
sadly endedLaffite’s career, but
meant Williamscould set up the
spare carfor Nigel Mansell, afte r
the differential hadblown inhis
FW11.‘OurNige’ wenton to win

In the paddockfor the 1966 ra ce
the J.A. Pearce EngineeringCooper
T73-Ferrari, to bedriven by Chris
Lawrence, caughtfire. Luckily, with
enoughextinguisherson hand the
car wasn’t damaged beyondrepair.
Lawrencetook the start and went
on to finish11th , three laps down
