Photographer: Ken Kaminesky
Location: Inle Lake, Myanmar
Equipment: Fujifilm X-T2, FUJINON
XF10-24mmF4 R OIS
Situation: While I travel extensively for
my work, there are few places that stir the
soul and touch the heart quite like Myan-
mar. Inle Lake is one of those places that
you’ll never forget once you visit. The
homes and businesses on the lake are
literally on the lake, and it’s incredible
to see all the stilted buildings that rise
above the surface of the water as your
boat motors along the waterways.
Another unique aspect of the lake is
the style of the fishing technique used
by the locals. There’s an elegance about
how the fishermen stand on one leg and
paddle their small boat by wrapping
their other leg around an oar to navigate
to the best spots on the lake to catch
fish. Both arms and legs are then used to
manipulate their distinct conical nets.
This shot was taken while leading
my Myanmar photo tour in December.
After a chilly boat ride in inky dark-
ness to get to our shoot location, we
were blessed with a gorgeous sunrise
with a palette of subtle pink and orange
hues adorning the morning sky. The
water was calm and still, and there
was an ethereal feeling of peace and
tranquility in the air. These are the
moments I live for, and I’m looking
forward to the next one.
