HANSI FLICK agreed a deal to coach
Bayern Munich until 2023. The 55-year-
old – who was placed in interim charge in
November and then given a permanent
deal the following month until the end
of the season – had won 18 of his 21
matches in charge as the side went four
points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

STEPHEN KENNY succeeded Mick
McCarthy as manager of the Republic
of Ireland. He had originally been set
to take over after Euro 2020 but the
postponement of the play-offs and
the finals tournament itself accelerated
FAI plans.

Former Arsenal players ALEX SONG
and JOHAN DJOUROU were among
nine players who were sacked by their
club side Sion for refusing to agree
to wage cuts during the indefinite
suspension of the Swiss top flight.

OPOKU AFRIYIE (1945-2020)
Scored twice as Ghana beat Uganda
in the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations Final
and was a sub when they won again
four years later. Leading scorer in the
Ghanaian top flight in 1979 and 1981
with Asante Kotoko, he joined Hearts of
Oak at the end of his career, becoming
one of the first players to play for the
country’s two most successful clubs.

PK BANERJEE (1936-2020)
Won a gold medal with India at the 1962
Asian Games, scoring the opening goal
in the Final against South Korea, and
captained his country at the 1960
Olympics, scoring in a 1-1 draw with
France. Later coached the national team.

JOSE LUIS CAPON (1948-2020)
Played 269 games in nine seasons with
Atletico Madrid, winning La Liga in 1973
and 1977, the Intercontinental Cup in
1974 and the 1976 Copa del Rey. A
runner-up in the 1974 European Cup
Final, which Atletico lost to Bayern
Munich, the defender was also capped
13 times by Spain.

MICHEL HIDALGO (1933-2020)
As coach of France, from 1976 to 1984,
he led Les Bleus to their first silverware
when winning the 1984 Euros, having
taken them to the World Cup semi-finals
two years earlier. An attacking midfielder
during his playing days for Le Havre,
Reims and Monaco, he scored in the
1956 European Cup Final as Reims
lost 4-3 to Real Madrid.

KWASI OWUSU (1945-2020)
Captained Ghana in the 1970 Africa Cup
of Nations Final, which they lost 1-0 to
the hosts Sudan. He was his country’s
all-time leading scorer with 36 goals
until Asamoah Gyan broke his record.

Hareide steps
down as coach
of Denmark
AGE HAREIDE stepped
down as Denmark’s
national coach following
the postponement of the
European Championship
finals until next year.
The Norwegian had
been due to leave in July.
He is set to be replaced
by former Mainz boss
Kasper Hjulmand.

PAPE DIOUF (1951-2020)
Became the first black president of a
major European football club when he
took charge of Marseille. Born in Chad,
his family moved back home to Senegal
when he was a child before he emigrated
to France at 17. He became president of
OM in 2005 and during his four years at
the helm they were French champions
once and runners-up twice, as well as
runners-up twice in the cup.

JOAQUIN PEIRO (1936-2020)
Ex Atletico Madrid, Torino, Internazionale
and Roma forward who was a member of
the Inter side that won the European Cup
in 1965. He also lifted the Cup-winners
Cup, with Atletico in 1962. Capped 12
times by Spain, he played at the 1962 and
1966 World Cups, and would later coach,
among others, Atletico Madrid and Malaga.

LORENZO SANZ (1943-2020)
Real Madrid president from 1995 to
2000 during a period in which they won
the Champions League twice. In 2006
he purchased Malaga before selling the
club in 2010.
