HOMEGROWN TALENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT

MOODBOARD

VALENTINA KARELLAS
Zero-waste designer Valentina Karellas was born
and bred in London and makes all her creations
herself, from discontinued yarns, on a vintage
knitting machine. She only creates knits to order
to avoid making unwanted stock, and saves every
scrap of yarn to create jewellery and other small
items so that nothing is wasted. Her designs are
named after little-known London streets
as “a little thank you” to her home city.

JOHN ARBON
Devon-based John Arbon has built a business
using the wool from local sheep and spinning
them himself on reclaimed machinery.

TOPSHOP
Since it was founded as a youth brand in
a British department store in 1964,
Topshop has been synonymous with
on-trend UK fashion.

HOPE MACAULAY
Hope Macaulay was born and
raised on the northern coast of Ireland
and learnt to knit from her grandmother.
Her bold, bright, chunky designs are hand knitted
freeform, and she loves to experiment with
diferent structures and colour combinations.

UIST WOOL
On a remote island in the Outer Hebrides,
Uist Wool has created work spinning
knitting wool from local sheep breeds.

OLIVER BONAS
Founder Olly started out as a one-man band
in 1993, selling items behind a second-
hand till from his irst shop – there are now
nearly 80 stores across the UK and Ireland.

FAT FAC E
Founded by two friends who wanted to
fund their skiing obsession, Fatface opened
its doors in Fulham in 1988. It now has
more than 200 stores in the UK and US.

Punk and new wave
designer Dame Vivienne
Westwood pioneered
unusual knits featuring ladders,
holes and safety pins, and the
mohair sweaters that became
a 1980s classic.

DAME ZANDR A RHODES
Famed for her bold, bright and beautiful
creations, Dame Zandra Rhodes was inspired by
Pop Art when she started designing, and was
later nicknamed the “Princess of Punk ”. She has
been designing knitwear since the mid-1970s
and has created some stunning hand knitting
patterns for Rowan as well as runway collections.
