Welcome
At Knitting, we’re all about slow fashion.
We love crafting garments that are on-
trend now but will stay the course as classic
heirlooms. We love taking our time over
our work. And we love to learn about the
provenance of the yarns we work with –
whether it’s Merino sheep grazing in the
Falkland Islands, alpacas roaming the
mountains of Peru or angora goats in the
Gobi Desert.
But personally, I love best of all working
with wool from the British Isles. For this
issue I’ve worked with Rowan’s British
offering, a blend of alpaca and wool, and
with Erika Knight’s Vintage Wool, a classic
yarn made in Yorkshire. But I’ve been
privileged to work with wools from a whole
range of producers dotted around the
British Isles, and have found them to be as
varied and fascinating as any fibres from
around the globe.
I’m really excited to feature so many
wonderful British wools in this issue,
from major brands such as West Yorkshire
Spinners via smaller operations like cover
star The Fibre Company to Kent’s Romney
Marsh Wools, a family-run farm whose
owner Kristina Boulden was kind enough
to host us for a sunny but very muddy photo
shoot. Elsewhere in the issue we meet a
couple who embarked on a new life sailing
a floating yarn shop, and Cheryl Lowe,
AKA Bored Knitless, who wowed judges on
Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas last year.
