U-23s coach Neil Critchley left the club in early
March to take up the position of head coach
at League One side Blackpool. After six-and-
a-half years of outstanding service within the
Reds’ Academy set-up, the 41-year-old also
took charge of the first team for two games
this season, overseeing the Carabao Cup tie
at Aston Villa in December and the FA Cup
fourth-round replay win against Shrewsbury at
Anfield. Jürgen Klopp said: “It’s a nice challenge
for him, a nice opportunity. He wanted to take it,
he asked the club and we said, ‘Yes, of course.’
It’s really nice because it shows it’s possible
that you can make your way as a youth or
U-23s coach as well and that’s always what we
wanted to have.”
