favors from everyone,” she said.
Frederick was impressed with
how quickly Eidson coordinated
the jump online—and said she
was especially glad Two Ways
Home got an audience now,
given its focus on mental health.
She noted that May is Mental
Health Awareness Month.
“Online artistic platforms
such as this one are such a
constructive way to not only
highlight a geographic region
where the festival is being ‘held,’
via a virtual tour of its program-
ming, but to give people hope
and agency to keep planning
and moving forward in their
lives,” Frederick said.
Vignone, meanwhile, looks
forward to a time when people
will again have a choice between
watching films online, or with
a crowd.
“As a filmmaker, you always
want your work to be seen
up on the big screen with big
sound, and all the trappings of
that experience. And we will
return to that reality in the
future,” he said. “Maybe even
with a vengeance after staying
inside for so long.” MM
HEARTLAND
INTERNATIONAL
FILM FESTIVAL
AND INDY
S H O R T S
INTERNATIONAL
FILM FESTIVAL
THERE’S A REASON
you’ll find the Heartland
International Film Festival
and its beloved sibling, the
Indy Shorts International
Film Festival, elsewhere
in these pages as one
of our 50 Film Festivals
Worth the Entry Fee.
Actually, there are a lot of
reasons. These Midwestern
stalwarts host more
than 400 independent
films a year for more
than 30,000 audience
members in Indianapolis,
focusing especially on
new moviemakers and
younger, more diverse
film lovers. They provide
a heartland stronghold of
movies that matter, with
inviting workshops, panels,
and cash awards. (The
Heartland International
Film Festival handed out
$59,000 in prizes last
year.) It also programmed
six Oscar-winning films.
Heartland lives up
to the aspirations of its
Jimmy Stewart Award,
which honors films
about the triumph of our
shared humanity through
determination, beating the
odds, humble vulnerability,
and courage in the face
of adversity. Could
anything be more relevant
now? MM
