most rib patterns it creates a stretchy fabric, but the central slipped
stitch is more prominent. The slipped stitch is worked on the
wrong side, as k1, p1, sl1, p1, k1. It would make a great hat brim.

SLIPPING SINGLE STITCHES WITH FLOATS
ON BOTH SIDES
Here we move on to a slightly more complicated pattern, where
single stitches are slipped on both right and wrong side rows. Linen
Stitch creates a very firm, dense fabric that doesn’t curl. It doesn’t
stretch much either, which makes it great for homeware from
placemats to cushions.
It is based on stocking stitch, with yarn slipped on the right
side on every row. Slip one stitch, work one stitch on every row,
staggering the slipped stitches between rows, so that you work the
stitch that was slipped on the previous row. This means that on
each right side row, the yarn is at the front, and on the wrong side,
the yarn is at the back. This creates little triangles of texture.

Other patterns that slip stitches on both sides are Woven Transverse
Herringbone, Jacquard Stitch and Cartridge Belt Rib.

SLIPPING MULTIPLE STITCHES WITH FLOATS
ON THE RIGHT SIDE
The next progression from single slip stitch patterns is slipping
one or more stitches. There are many stitch patterns that use this

concept, and here is one – a woven diamond pattern. It is based
on stocking stitch, with stitches slipped on right side rows only,
with yarn at the front, while every wrong side row is in plain purl.
On some rows only one stitch is slipped, on others two or three
stitches. It creates a lovely textured diamond pattern.

SLIP STITCH PATTERNS COMBINED WITH
OTHER TECHNIQUES
Sometimes, slipped stitches are combined with other techniques.
Butterfly Stitch combines multiple stitches slipped with yarn on the
right side, with a method of catching them together to form an effect
that looks a bit like a butterfly.

Other slip stitch patterns that combine different techniques include
Mock Honeycomb, Mock Gull Stitch and slipped cable patterns.

In summary, slip stitch patterns open up endless possibilities
to create texture, and are suitable for all sorts of knitwear, from
garments and babywear through to homeware. And there are
patterns for beginners as well as more complicated explorations
for competent knitters.
