they were never meant for general
circulation. The United States had
left behind the gold standard the year
prior, and were in need of a new way

represented its worth in gold, and
didn’t require a forklift to move.
By 1960, the notes had served their
purpose, and most were destroyed.
Only a small number still exist,
including notes held by the
