I was struck by this David
Phipps image because it’s very
‘of its time’: thecars have been
assembled in a semicircle inthe
paddock for some reason lost
to the mists of time (perhaps
a Goodyear marketing shot),
and the drivers are just hanging
around and chatting with one
another. The 1973 French GP
was Paul Ricard’s second time
hosting the raceand you can
recognise that very distinctive
quality of light you getin this
part ofthe world.
I also likeit because it’s
got the beautiful JPS-liveried
Lotus 72 inthere, morethan
compensating for the aesthetic
howler that was thedisastrous
Ferrari 312B3!
Secondtime’s
acharm
