2019 RACE RECAP

This race signified a turning pointfor Ferrari prodigy
CharlesLeclerc.Starting from pole position,Leclerc led the
initial stages after MaxVerstappen’s anti-stall kicked in at
the start, dropping him from secondto eighth.
High temperaturestook theirtoll on the Mercedes cars
and world championLewis Hamiltontoiled. Verstappen
charged back through the middle of thetop ten, passing
Leclerc’steam-mate SebastianVettel andfi nally hassling
Leclerc himself. With two lapsto run they banged wheels
as Verstappen made his move at Turn 3. Leclerc ran wide
and Verstappen went onto win – butLeclerc swore he
would never be such a walkover in combat again...

The2020seasonwillremaina blip on the radar of grand
prix historyfor yearsto come since the opening tranche
of eight races now includes two double-headers. Nearly
four months after the cancellation of the season opener
in Australia, the world championshipgets under way at the
Red Bull Ring on theAustrian GP’s original slot of 5 July,
with theSteiermark GP a week later at the samevenue.
That’s great newsfor Red Bull’s MaxVerstappen. Max
may be performing in front of empty grandstands rather
than his ‘Orange Army’, but he’s theform man having won
the previous twoAustrian GPs. There’s a caveat here in
that by this timeRed Bull has usually developed its way
out of any early season car weaknesses. But if Max were
to win it would makefor an even more eventful year...

THE MAIN EVENT KEY CORNER: TURN 3This relatively open-angled hairpin
provides the most significantovertaking opportunity on this
short circuit. Judging moves here is tricky because of the
proximity ofTurn 2, which is merely a kink but it makes the
approachto Turn 3 more challenging.
