2019 RACE RECAP

This was the grand prix that ended Pierre Gasly’stenure
as MaxVerstappen’sRed Bullteam-mate.Verstappen
qualified on pole position but Gasly’s poor performance on
Saturday – he started sixth – proved crucial on race day.
Verstappen led from lights out, helpedby the Mercedes
of Lewis Hamilton andValtteri Bottas trippingover each
other as they challenged him into thefi rst two corners.
Wing damage pegged Bottas back and although Hamilton
appearedto be struggling with tyres and brakes, the huge
gap behind him – which oughtto have been occupiedby
Gasly and Bottas – enabled himto make a second pitstop
and catch and passVerstappen late on.

Previouslyconstitutionallyconjoinedfor 50 years prior
to 1918,Austria and Hungary don’t share a language or
currency butgeographical proximity is convenient in the
COVID-19 era: the Hungaroring is just 260 milesby road
from theRed Bull Ring, enabling thetemporarily slimmed-
down F1 circusto relocateto Budapest a week after the
Austrian double-header.
Situatedjust east of the Hungarian capital, the
Hungaroringis an undulating track whichhas grown in
stature in recent years. Itremainsa trickyplace on which
to overtake, but circumstanceshave conspiredto make
many ofthe most recent racesmemorable andexcitingfor
a varie ty of reasons. The variable weather helps – it can go
from hotand dustyto soakingwet over the race weekend.

THE MAIN EVENT KEY CORNER: TURN 1Extended and reprofiled in 2003
to improve the possibility ofovertaking,Turn 1 is a sharp
hairpin at the end of the main straight. In its currentform,
brakingtoo late compromises drivers into thefollowing
two corners and opens up more opportunitiesto pass.
