RETRO REDS... SIMON SAYS: IT’S GOOD TO GO GREY!
Four years ago this month the Liverpool FC first-team squad
were North America-bound for their summer tour ahead of
Jürgen Klopp’s first full season in charge, 2016/17.
In late July the new third kit was launched in a live social-media
broadcast at the Facebook Village in Palo Alto, California. There
for the big reveal were Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet and James
Milner with LFCTV presenter Claire Rourke.
The colour-scheme was ‘Toxic Thunder’ and the kit drew
inspiration from the matchday programme for the 2001 UEFA
Cup final against Alaves.
Simon, in his new grey attire, joked: “It makes a change for the
goalkeeper not be standing out so much, so I’m happy with it!
We all hope we can win as many points with this kit as possible.”
As it happens Liverpool’s total of 76 that coming campaign was
enough to secure a return to Champions League football.
Check out these colourful ‘kit
cards’ from the late Sixties
featuring Liverpool FC stars
Tommy Lawrence, Ron Yeats,
Tommy Smith and Chris
Lawler, as produced by a games
company called Philmar. They
also made card sets based on
children’s TV programmes
of the time, like Andy Pandy,
Fireball XL5 and Lenny the Lion.
The name Philmar came from
the creator, Philip Marx.
A classic Eighties matchday programme if
there ever was one, even if the same stadium
shot, showcasing the old Main Stand, was
used on the majority of front covers that

A feast of red-and-yellow, its 50p price got

The day’s football saw the
Reds enjoy a 3-0 win over

mates Paul Walsh and Craig
Johnston registering at the
Kop-end after the break.
