CLINCHED IT

I

t’s not how any of us dreamt it, but all that really
matters is that what Jürgen Klopp calls “the most
important of the least important things” is here.
Top-flight title no19 certainly has its unique story to tell,
as do so many other seasons, and with the Reds finally
confirming their status as 2019/20 champions let’s delve
into the archives to recall how each of those previous 18
were secured. It’s not the first time we’ve won the league
in June you know...
Way back in 1900/01 it was victory over fellow
championship challengers Nottingham Forest in the
penultimate fixture that gave LFC the upper hand in
pursuit of a first league crown.
Goals from Jack Cox and Bill Goldie gave the Reds a
2-0 win – meaning that avoiding defeat at bottom side
West Bromwich Albion would see Tom Watson’s side
leapfrog Sunderland who had already completed their
league programme.
At the Hawthorns it was Scottish inside-right Johnny
Walker who provided the only goal to complete a
stunning upturn in form from the end of February that
saw the Reds jump from eighth to first with a run of nine
wins and three draws.
Title no2 came five years later. Long story short: in the
intervening years Liverpool were both
relegated to the second division and
promoted as champions in successive
years, spectacularly backing up that
blip with the top-tier prize in their first
campaign back.
Despite losing their first three games
a strong sequence of results during
what’s now the yellow-ball part of
the season saw the ‘Anfielders’ surge
from bottom in September to top
in December and that’s where they
stayed.
