EDITOR’S LETTER

F

ifty years ago this month, police raided the Stonewall

Inn. Instead of going quietly into the night, patrons of

the Greenwich Village gay bar fought back, declaring,

“No more!” No more being targeted by law enforcement

for simply existing. No more living in the shadows. And

no more being treated like second-class citizens. From that uprising,

the gay rights movement was born, and on June 30, the streets of New

York City will be flooded with rainbows and revelry.

Today we’re at another flash point for human rights. Trans visibility

is at an all-time high as transgender and nonbinary individuals like Pose

actress and model Indya Moore bravely share their stories. But with

awareness has also come a rise in anti-transgender violence. Moore,

ELLE’s first transgender cover star, spent several days with writer Jada

Yuan revealing her harrowing journey to becoming her most authentic

and outspoken self (“Indya Rises,” page 121).

Trans rights are also top of mind for Céline Dion. She co-created

Celinununu, a line of genderless children’s clothing, expressly to free

kids from the pressure to conform to gender norms. At 51, the singer is

defying society’s expectations for how women of a certain age should

dress and behave, and as a result is more popular than ever. Céline

recently secured her first-ever beauty contract with L’Oréal Paris and

will soon embark on her first world tour in over a decade. In this issue,

she explains that in some ways, she feels like a kid all over again. “I am

a woman assuming her own destiny, full of energy and in love with

life,” she tells ELLE (“A Fantastic Woman,” page 130).

This summer also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Woodstock

music festival. It’s no coincidence that we’ve seen a resurgence of tie-

dye, exaggerated florals, and fluid silhouettes in fashion (“Higher &

Higher,” page 144). What the world needs now is more love and em-

pathy. Dress accordingly—rainbows welcome.
