Built on part of the former World War Two
airfield of RAF Winthorpe, Newark Air Museum
showcases a vast collection of helicopters,
aeroplanes, and other machines and exhibits
to offer visitors an insight into aviation history.
Aircrafts to be seen at the museum include 13
National Benchmark aircraft; 34 Significant
aircraft and 21 Noteworthy aircraft as listed in the
National Aviation Heritage Register.

Another memorable attraction is the National
Civil War Centre in Newark. The English Civil
War between the Parliamentarians and Royalists
is regarded as one of Britain’s deadliest conflicts,
and visitors to the centre will learn how the
people of Newark survived three sieges, while also
getting the chance to feel the weight of armour
and weapons from the period. While in the area,
you can visit Newark Castle, which was partly
destroyed at the end of the civil war in 1646 – the
main frame of the fort has stood on the banks for
the River Trent for more than 900 years.

N

ottinghamshire is a fantastic area to enjoy
historic sites, culturally significant museums
and beautiful entertainment venues, not to
mention its strong links to English folklore
as the home of Robin Hood, possibly the
most well-known outlaw in the country (a visit to his
statue is somewhat of a must). Here’s just a taster of what
you can get up to on a future visit...

Hoping to inspire people of all ages to become active
citizens, the National Justice Museum is located in
Nottingham’s historic Shire Hall and County Gaol. The
museum allows groups to delve into the fascinating history
of justice through time, meeting historical characters
along the way, while also taking in its vast collection and
other interactive activities. For an even more exciting
trip, groups can visit the City of Caves, a hidden maze of
more than 500 original sandstone caves underneath the
streets of Nottingham. Run by the museum, visitors will
investigate the social history of the caves, including the
only medieval underground tannery in the country and
the remnants of Drury Hill Victorian slums.

We take a look at some of best things on offer in Robin Hood’s home county,
ready for when you’re planning your next itinerary.
