X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

Not exactly a faithful movie tie-in to the
much-maligned movie of the same name,
Activision’s 2009 game is a third-person
slash-’em up that served to remind
parents why not all superheroes are
family-friendly. If Jackman’s long-running
stint as Logan added a few years to the
X-Men films’ age ratings, this game pulls
absolutely no punches, or ‘snikkt’s when
it comes to its violence and gore. You
see, if you’ve got a short, hairy bloke with
adamantium knives coming out of his
knuckles he’s going to use them, and as
the plot takes Logan through his military
past via some parallel events to the
film, you get to dismember, impale and
disembowel enemies left right and centre.
It makes Deadpool look like Stardew Valley.

BATMAN:

ARKHAM KNIGHT

Rocksteady’s
Arkham trilogy
that started
with Arkham
Asylum and
Arkham City
culminates in this bit of
Xbox One brilliance. Despite a
plot that is less surprising than a
wind-up exploding penguin, and some
almost awful convoluted sequences
involving combat in the Batmobile, its
mix of stealth, intuitive counterattack-
based combat, investigation, a huge
open-world Gotham City and wealth of
great Batman characters with top-notch
voice acting make this the super-est of our
superhero Xbox games. The Arkham series is
in fact, so good, that every time DC make a
new film, we gamers groan at the apparent
ineptitude of Hollywood when it comes to
casting and writing Batman movies. And,
despite the Joker being ‘dead’, Mark Hamill
puts in his best turn yet as the Clown Prince
plaguing Bruce Wayne’s mind.
