Although he never asked for this, he’s ended

up on our list of favourite heroes anyway.

Adam Jensen, chief of security at advance

biotech company Sarif Industries, was left

for dead following a terrorist assault on the

company’s headquarters. He was barely

alive, but fortunately they could rebuild him,

they had the technology. Half a year later,

equipped with a whole host of cybernetic

augmentations and a hunger for energy

bars, he was back in action and saving lives

left, right and centre, while at the same

time thwarting the dastardly plans of the

Illuminati which made several attempts to kill

Jensen in an effort to control all of humanity.

Surprisingly, despite his size he’s really adept

at crawling through small air vents.

SAM FISHER

SPLINTER CELL

This stealthy operative will choke out all

your soldiers, unravel your international

conspiracy, and eat your last Rolo before

you even realise he’s onto you. Agent

Fisher is the undisputed master of the

shadows, using his elite military training

and arsenal of gadgets to run rings

around hapless guards the world over

• often without ever firing a shot. He’s
  a lone wolf, but with a softer side, with
  shadowy figures often using his love for
  his young daughter to manipulate him.
  Though his last game was all the way
  back in 2013, cameos in Ghost Recon
  Wildlands and Far Cry New Dawn suggest
  someone at Ubisoft still has a soft spot
  for old Sam.

AGENT 47

HITMAN

Okay, so ‘cold-hearted assassin’ and

‘hero’ don’t usually go hand in hand,

but give this sinister cueball a chance.

His targets are (mostly) bad people,

after all, and he always prefers to take

them out without any civilian casualties

if he can help it. Just imagine how

many innocents might have died had

his rotten targets walked free. It’s not

like he chose this path, either – as a

brainwashed clone manipulated by

an elaborate conspiracy and trained

from birth to become the perfect killer,

he’s never had much chance to assert

his independence. Plus he’s always

impeccably dressed and we can’t help

but love his dry sense of humour.

LIGHTNING

FINAL FANTASY

Also known as Claire Farron, Lightning may

seem a bit cold and calculating at first,

but she is in fact a fiercely protective and

devoted sister. Over the span of three games,

it’s clear that she does everything in her

power to ensure that her sibling, Serah,

remains safe. But even after her sister’s

death she jumps at any opportunity to

bring her back to life. During this time she

becomes a Savior, a spiritual guide that’s

tasked with saving humanity’s souls. With

her companions, she eventually creates a

brand-new universe, bringing humanity with

her. That’s a pretty nice gesture.

MIRROR’S EDGE

In a world of crushing capitalist oppression

and invasive technology (keep your jokes

about 2019 to yourself), couriers have a

bit more to worry about than just avoiding

snappy dogs and getting rained on. Running

across rooftops and through office buildings,

Faith covertly transports vital messages

and data, evading high-tech security

forces as she goes. With unmatched agility,

parkour skills and high-speed martial arts

moves, she’s an unstoppable force – like if

a Terminator delivered packages for Amazon

Prime. Along the way she finds time to foil

corporate plans and traitorous conspiracies,

saving the city with the pure power of speed.

Also, she’s a big proponent of distinctive eye

and sleeve tattoos.

DA FIRENZE

ASSASSIN’S CREED

After his father and two brothers were

murdered, Ezio fled his home in Florence,

Italy, with his mother and sister and

vowed to avenge their deaths, but he

ended up getting involved in something

much bigger: the impending destruction

of the world. Following in his father’s

footsteps, Ezio became a member of

the Order Of Assassins, and eventually

Grand Master of the Order, to put an

end to the Templars. With the help of

his uncle and father’s Assassin friends

he managed to spread the Assassins’

influence across Europe. Sadly, he

died of a heart attack, but it was while

looking at the smiles of his family.
