Camelot we ended up with upwards of 47
different character classes. Which led to
some hysterically fun PVP dynamics that was
fun for the people doing the killing, but not
so much fun for the people being killed. So
with ESO we went a different way because of
that experience, which was [to] have a limited
number of classes but they all share a certain
set of abilities so that you can make your
character be much different from another
person’s character, but everyone is using a
shared pool of different abilities that makes it
harder to balance each character but ensures
that the system doesn’t get too out of whack.

When you’re not playing The Elder Scrolls
Online, what are you playing?
So I will always say off the bat that I’m a huge
FIFA fan, I’ve played it, like, every year since
FIFA 98 or something. I always take a team
from the lowest rank, it’s league two in the
latest versions, and take it to the Champion’s
League or the Premier League.

DARK AGE OF

CAMELOT 2001

Outside of ESO this is the
game that Matt Firor is
most known for. DAOC was
a medieval fantasy MMORPG
based on Arthurian legend,
where the land has been
split into three parts that
are at war with one another.

ALIENS ONLINE 1998

Mythic Entertainment
managed to obtain the
licence to make a first-
person shooter based on
the Alien franchise. Players
could fight alongside teams
of up to 30 players on either
the Colonial Marines or the
alien sides.

DARKNESS FALLS:

THE CRUSADE 1991

Originally called Tempest,
this was an online RPG
and Matt Firor’s first game
credit. The game had
players taking on the part
of various supernatural
creatures and adventuring
into a fantasy world.

MAGIC
MOMENTS

So you follow football quite a bit?
Oh yeah, I’m a huge Arsenal fan.

What would you say is your most memorable
moment during the time of ESO?
I think the biggest moment that I had in terms
of Elder Scrolls Online was the night that
we opened the game, which was in March
because we had early access for preorder
customers. I actually just got my character, I
had to create a new character. My character
that I play with online is a standard player
account. So I made a character and ran to the

middle of Daggerfall and used the sit emote.
So I sat in a chair in the middle of Daggerfall
and just watched players run past me as they
were coming into the game. There was no
other feeling like it. I’m killing myself for not
recording it. There’s lots of screenshots. But
just being the lead of the creative team that
made it all possible and watch other people
seeing the game for the first time, there’s
just no other feeling like that. It’s not my
world anymore, it’s now everyone’s. It feels
like a graduation, everything just changed
at that moment.
