thishasactuallycreatedagreat
opportunityfortheLeon’ssupposedlysportycharacterto
reallyshine–somethingithas
noexcusesfornotdoing,givenitsextrapowerandthestiffer
suspensionthatFRtrimbrings.
It’llneedtoreallyimpressontheroadtobettertheFord
Focus,though.Thishuge-sellinghatchbackhaslongbeenthekeen
driver’schoiceinthisclass,and
thelatestversionisanythingbutaone-trickpony.

Bythetimeyoureadthis,some
changeswillhavebeenmadeto
theFocus’sengineline-up.Thesame123bhp1.0-litrepetrolengine
willstillbeavailable,butifyou’replacingafactoryorderratherthan
buyingfromexistingstock,itwill
comewithmildhybridelectricalassistancetoimprovefuel
economyandperformance.
That’sagoodthing,becausetheFocusdoesn’tcurrentlyimpress
ineitherofthoseareas.We’lldeal
withreal-worldeconomylater,butperformanceisprobablybest
describedas‘acceptable’.That’stosay,youwon’tstruggletogetup
steephillsorkeepupwithtraffic
onthemotorway,andthere’senoughpullfromlowrevstoavoid
theneedtothrashtheenginehard.
We’vealreadytriedthenewmildhybridsysteminthePuma,andit
shouldgiveasmallbutnoticeable
increaseinoomphwhenyouputyourfootdownintheFocus.
ThemildhybridFocuswouldstillbetheslowcoachofthis
particulartrio,though.Thelarger
enginesintheGolfandLeonoffermuchquickeracceleration,with
eventheGolfcapableofhitting
60mphfromrestmorethanasecondquickerthantheFocus.
Givenourtestcar’sextrapower,youprobablywon’tbesurprised
tolearnthattheLeonisquickest.
Youdon’treallynoticeanyextrapunchatlowrevs,partlybecause
ithaslongergearingthanitstwo
rivals,butlettherevsbuildanditsaccelerationadvantageoverthe
GolfisasgreatastheGolf’sisover
theFocus.Itmanagedtosprintfrom0-60mphinjust7.7sec.
MoreofasurpriseisthefactthattheLeon’sengineisalso
morerefinedthanthatofthe
Focushasplayfulhandlingwhenit’spushedhard,butitssteeringfeelsunnatural
Agile,grippyandsweetlybalanced,theLeontrumpseventheFocusforhandling
Golfis capablebuthardlyexciting,withmorebodyleanin cornersthanitsrivals
