Tabs have been redesigned, too, and it’s now
possible to hover over a tab to see a page
preview. Extensions have been given some love,
with a new category in the Mac App Store. Apple
is also introducing support for WebExtensions
API, so Chrome and Firefox extensions can be
converted into Safari extensions without
additional development time. Finally, the
redesigned Safari features a Built-In Translation
feature, which works for websites in English,
Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and
Brazilian Portuguese, but more are expected to
be added in the coming months and years. This
is another direct hit at Google Chrome, offering
users an ad-free, tracking-free alternative to
Google Translate. It might not be perfect at
launch, but Google finally has a genuine rival.


PORTING APPS FROM iOS


With the introduction of Project Catalyst a
couple of years ago, Apple began porting apps
from iOS over to the Mac, including Music,
Podcasts, and News. This year, Messages has
been given the same treatment, and now
up to nine conversations can be pinned to
the top of the Messages app for easy access.
Typing indicators have been added, and some
previously exclusive features like Memoji
stickers, #images search, and GIF search have
been brought to the Mac, making the iOS
messaging experience more fun and engaging.
Other new features, as introduced in iOS 14,
include inline replies to keep conversations
organized, mentions, and group customization,
with photos, emoji, and Memoji added.
