QUILT NOW CLASSICS

Cut the binding fabric into five
2½" x WOF strips.

ASSEMBLY

2

To construct the flying geese for the
bottom of the flag blocks, draw a line
diagonally on the reverse of each of the
4½" squares. If your prints are directional,
pay attention to which direction you
want the finished block to be. With right
sides together, align one marked square
with one edge of the 4½x8½" rectangle.
Stitch just to the outside of the diagonal
line. Cut ¼" beyond the stitching line.
Press the triangle open and the seam
allowance out towards the triangle.
Repeat these steps on the other edge
of the rectangle to complete the unit.
Sew a flying geese unit to the bottom
of the corresponding 8½" square and
press the seam towards the square.
The block should measure 8½x12½".
Repeat for a total of 12 blocks.

SASHING THE BLOCKS

3

Lay the blocks out in three rows of
four on a clean floor or design wall,

CUTTING

1

Press your fabric well before starting,
trim off the selvedges and from each
print fabric fat eighth cut one 8½"
square and two 4½" squares for a
total of 12 8½" squares, each with
two matching 4½" squares.

From the background fabric, cut three
4½" x WOF strips. Sub-cut into a total
of 12 4½x8½" rectangles. From the
background fabric cut 11 2½" x WOF
strips. Sub-cut three of these strips into
a total of 12 2½x10½" strips. Sub-cut a
further four strips into a total of nine
2½x12½" strips. The remaining five
strips can be set aside until later.

TOP TIP!
Take a quick photo
with your phone of the
laid-out blocks so that
you can keep referring
to it as you move to
and from the sewing
machine to sew the
sashing on!

Pin and sew a 2½x12½" sashing strip
to the right-hand side of the first three
blocks of each row. Press the seams out.
Lay the blocks back out on the floor/
design wall and sew a 2½x10½" strip to
each of the blocks, alternating between
the top and the bottom of the block.
Refer to the finished quilt picture as a
guide. Press seams out.
