Sarah Ashford shares the lowdown on this year’s
QuiltCon in Austin, Texas

SHOW
The Modern Quilt Guild’s annual show
QuiltCon was back for 2020, and this
time in the fabulous city of Austin, Texas.
This modern, chic city, with its plethora of
restaurants, bars and an eclectic live music
scene made it a wonderful destination
not only for a quilt show but for really
experiencing a slice of Texas culture.
It’s definitely a party city, and for me it
meant enjoying the show all day and
experiencing Austin by night, which was
such fun and slightly exhausting!

Airbnb just across the road from the
convention centre. This meant that
when our feet got tired from standing
and looking at beautiful quilts and
perusing the expansive selection of
vendor booths, we could pop back for
a quick rest – it was perfect.
It was wonderful to see so many quilts
from British makers, including Sarah
Hibbert, Nick Ball, Lucy Engels, Jo Avery
and Quilt Now’s own Paula Steel, who
happily was also in Austin to see her
quilts on display. It was such a thrill to
see quilts that I knew and recognised
and to have the opportunity to admire
them up close. One thing I did notice
was that, this year, curves are very much
on trend and as you can see from the
photos, there were some pretty inventive
curved quilts going on! As always, the
quilting never ceases to amaze me. There
is definitely a preference for dense free-
motion quilting, filling negative spaces
