When IBIS unit were used in
DSLRs, their impact wasn’t
visible in the viewfi nder, but
because the electronic
viewfi nders in mirrorless
cameras use the image signal
from the sensor, you can see
the stabilised view.
A key advantage of IBIS is

that it can be used with any
compatible lens. That means
that the lenses can be
smaller, lighter and more
a‚ ordable. However, the
sensor can only make
relatively small movements, so
IBIS tends to be less e‚ ective
with long telephoto lenses
than lens-based
stabilisation.

To fi nd out how slow a shutter speed you can use with
your camera and lens, shoot a subject with lots of fi ne
detail and check the images on a computer at 100% on
screen. Ideally, shoot 10 or so images at each focal
length and shutter speed as this enables you to calculate
your hit rate. If, for example, you fi nd that 5/10 of your
images are sharp at one particular setting, you’ll know
that you need to shoot at least two images to be
reasonably confi dent of getting a sharp result.
