Paul is a keen amateur photographer from
Hereford who loves shooting nature, particularly
using macro photography. He supports the
Herefordshire Wildlife Trust as a volunteer
photographer when his work commitments allow.
After working in the military for 26 years he now
works for a local medical services and supplies
company supporting the NHS and other medical
agencies. He has kept a keen eye on a small
pre-formed pond over the past year and is always
looking to see what new life there is. ‘Recently I
noticed these backswimmers (water boatman) and
decided to capture a few in a container with the
intention of shooting through the side. I shot on
manual using the flash from above to paint light into
the container. The white background and white card
under the container bounced light to reduce
shadow. Even though the water looked clean to the
naked eye there was quite a lot of blemish removal
required using the Photoshop blemish tool. I also
increased the exposure slightly. I enjoy this kind of
macro photography because of the detail it reveals.’
