Is Formula One a game of innovation
or imitation? In truth, it has always
been a bit of both, for no sooner have
one team found a significant technical
edge than all the others pile in with
their own versions of it. But has the
process gone too far?
The matter has come to the fore in
the build-up to this weekend’s
Hungarian Grand Prix. And it centres
on the impressive displays by Racing
Point’s RP20 cars over the past
fortnight in the first two races of the
season in Austria. Sergio Pérez and
Lance Stroll, the team’s drivers, have yet
to get on the podium but have moved
the team up to fourth in the
constructors’ championship, the best of
all the so-called mid-grid outfits.
Grumbling about their rapid
progress came to a head after last
Sunday’s Styrian Grand Prix, when
Renault lodged an official protest about
the RP20 construction. Their
complaint centres on the design of the
car’s brake ducts, a seemingly arcane
piece of kit but one that has huge signif-
icance for an F1 car’s performance —
and, perhaps, even greater significance
for the future direction of the sport.
Last year, after many seasons of
thankless toil — and after a massive
injection of funds from new owners —
Racing Point’s engineers took the deci-
sion to be a lot less radical in the design
of their 2020 car. In short, they looked
at what Mercedes were doing — win-
ning a sixth consecutive constructors’
title by a huge margin — and decided to
follow suit. When the RP20 rolled out of

now have to put together the evidence
to show that we are completely legal.”
The wider context is that F1 wants to
get away from a model in which the
smaller teams hang on the coat tails of
the big beasts. Ferrari — whose own
big-beast status looks a little shaky at
present — agree with that approach.
“Each team should be independent
and be capable of doing their own
developments,” Mattia Binotto, the
Ferrari chief, said. “It is great to have ten
teams with different cars on the grid.”

For Renault, the brake duct issue is as
much a test case of principle as disquiet
over a particular component.
Marcin Budkowski, their executive
director, said: “The main point is that
the brake ducts are essential perform-
ance differentiators on Formula One
cars. They are not only there to cool the
brakes, they are an essential aero-
dynamic device but they also control
the tyre temperatures and we know the
tyre temperatures are important in
Formula One.

“For us, it is important to clarify what
is permissible and what isn’t, but also
what Formula One wants in the future.
What is the model we want?
“Do we want a model where we have
ten teams independently fighting each
other, a more equal distribution of
funds and cost caps so that teams
eventually come to similar levels of
spending? We think there is a great
opportunity for the sport to have ten
teams, maybe more, fighting on equal
terms.”
While all this jostling went on behind
the scenes, out on the track Lewis
Hamilton did nothing to undermine his
status as clear favourite to take another
win in his quest to equal Michael
Schumacher’s record of seven driver’s
titles. Red Bull had been expected to
perform well on a tight Hungaroring
track that is much better suited to their
car than the faster-flowing Austrian
circuit, but Hamilton was well out in
front during the morning practice
session yesterday.
Heavy rain hit the afternoon session,
denying Red Bull the opportunity to
make up ground. “I don’t think I’d
describe it [Mercedes’ pace] as
worrying,” Paul Monaghan, Red Bull’s
chief engineer, said.
“But it has set the bar and we’ve got to
develop faster than Mercedes to
challenge for the championship. We
can do that, we have done that in the
past. Worrying? No. Challenging? Yes.”

‘Pink Mercedes’

causing uproar

in the paddock

the factory before the new season, it was
quickly dubbed “the Pink Mercedes”.
F1 regulations allow teams to supply
rivals with some parts, chiefly engines
and outboard suspension components,
but they also insist that teams must
evolve their own intellectual property
and produce their own body tubs, aero-
dynamics and other listed elements.
And this is where the pink car has en-
tered a decidedly grey area, with Ren-
ault claiming that Racing Point’s ducts
are Mercedes ducts in all but name.
Stewards impounded the parts and
put Racing Point, Renault and
Mercedes on notice to co-operate with
an inquiry, which is set to reach a
decision within the next fortnight.
Racing Point have labelled the
protest “misconceived and poorly
informed” and are perfectly open about
how they have modelled the RP20 on
the 2019 Mercedes cars, but they insist
that the surface similarities do not tell
the whole story.
“There are things the camera can’t
see, the internal surfaces of the brake
duct, for example, that we completely
designed and developed ourselves,”
Otmar Szafnauer, the Racing Point
principal, said. “When they compare
the two parts the FIA [the governing
body] will absolutely know that the
brake ducts are unique and designed by
us.”
Szafnauer admitted that he had been
expecting a complaint since the car was
unveiled. Results in Austria appear to
have accelerated the process.
“There were rumours of potential
protests in Australia [the cancelled
season curtain-raiser in March] so our
expectations were that something
would happen,” Szafnauer said. “We
