Whatever the truth, it
has long fascinated
artists, inspiring

stopping to eat or
drink, despite the
exhaustion. By the time
the authorities acted,
hundreds of people had
joined in. It is said this
went on for weeks, with
many unfortunate folk
collapsing or dying. The
