stories of her life, and
they are zestily retold
here. One anecdote has
her at 19 singing the
song I Cain’t Say No
to a group of stuffy
politicians. After an
awkward pause, King
George VI roared with
laughter, which was
the kind of paternal
indulgence that this
programme suggests
shaped (and, perhaps,
harmed) her later life.

Private Lives of

the Windsors
Smithsonian, 8pm

After last week’s profile
of what it called “the
glory hound” Lord
Mountbatten, it’s
the turn of “the
troublemaker” Princess
Margaret to come
under the spotlight in
this three-part series.
Most people will be
familiar with the key

on the event. Another
potential clue about
what to expect comes
from the presence of
Glazer’s musical
collaborator Mica Levi,
with whom he worked
on the disturbing,
erotically charged and
critically acclaimed
Under the Skin (2014),
which imagined
Scarlett Johansson as
a sexy alien preying
on humans in Glasgow.

Entrez dans la danse,
the French author Jean
Teulé’s 2018 novel. Now
it’s the turn of Jonathan
Glazer, the director of
films such as Sexy Beast
and Under the Skin,
who devised this dance
film inspired by the
tale, under isolation
conditions. Previews
were not available at
the time of publication,
but we’re promised
a dramatic meditation

but the cause of what
became known as the
“dancing plague of
Strasbourg” remains
unknown. Some say
that its victims were
taken over by some
form of religiously
inspired mania, or even
that they could have
been poisoned.
Whatever the truth, it
has long fascinated
artists, inspiring
(among other things)

the night and the next
day, most barely
stopping to eat or
drink, despite the
exhaustion. By the time
the authorities acted,
hundreds of people had
joined in. It is said this
went on for weeks, with
many unfortunate folk
collapsing or dying. The
story was documented
a couple of decades
later by the Swiss
physician Paracelsus,
