the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
pnMqqtor more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

The large swing on today’s d e al
from the Alt Invitational VI online
resulted largely from how East, by
far the weakest hand of the four,
behaved in the auction.
Dror Padon of Israel (represent-
ing team Tulin) at Table One kept
quiet then doubled the final 5 ♦
contract. Zach Grossack of the
USA (representing team Lebowitz)
bid 5 ♣on three small cards and
didn’t double 5 ♦. In fact one could
say, a tad cruelly, that if he was
going to bid 5 ♣, he was right not to
double 5 ♦.
At Table One, Alon Birman (of
Israel) led the ace of clubs and,
dummy out of clubs, switched to
the ten of hearts. Declarer won the
king and led a diamond to the
queen but East won the ace and
switched to the ten of spades. It was
no surprise to him that West ruffed
— he knew West held 11 cards
between hearts and clubs. After
ruffing, West had no hesitation in
leading a second heart, East ruffing.
That was two down and E-W +500.
Now put yourself in Adam
Grossack’s shoes at Table Two.
Dummy has only one club; his
partner, brother Zach, has bid all
the way to 5 ♣. Desperate to put
him on lead for a spade ruff before
his trumps are drawn, West led a
low club (actually, the seven). He
will have been disappointed (an
understatement) to view the size of
dummy’s singleton.
After winning dummy’s bare
queen of clubs, declarer led a dia-
mond. East rose sharply with the
ace and led a spade, West ruffing,
but that was the end of the party.

( 1 ) North-South at both tables were playing
Strong Notrump and Five-card Majors.
( 2 ) Showing 5-5 (at least) in the two low-
est unbid suits (ie clubs and hearts).
(3) Showing a good diamond raise ( 3 ♦would
be competitive, potentially quite weak).
(4) Showing his sixth club (and decent play-
ing strength).
(5) Well judged by East. Knowing his part-
ner has only two cards between spades and
diamonds, he can envisage a decent chance
of a defensive cross-ruff.

(1) Splinter bid, showing a singleton or void
club and game values, agreeing partner’s
diamonds. Gold’s 3 ♣at Table One is more
economical, perhaps leading to 3NT. Bakhshi’s
4 ♣is more descriptive. Close choice.
( 2 ) Bold and was to backfire in a rather
unusual fashion.
