Chrysostomos Panayiotopoulos

Neurologist who specialised in the treatment of epilepsy

Approbation was never in short
supply for Chrysostomos Pan-
ayiotopoulos, but he was under
no illusion that it was the most
important thing in life. One of
the fathers of the study of epi-
lepsy, he put his name to a varie-
ty of the condition and taught its
treatment at the universities of
Harvard, Colorado, Riyadh and
Western Australia. Yet these
plaudits did not matter much to
him, because his difficult early
years had given him an indelible
sense that a good life consisted
of helping others, and being
grateful for being able to meet
one’s basic needs.
He was born on the Greek is-
land of Tinos in the Aegean to
Pavlos and Sophia in 1938. Still
in the throes of the Depression,
the islanders struggled to feed
themselves. During the years of
Nazi occupation and the bitter
civil war that followed, he had to
share his food with his dog to

stop it starving. The family
moved to the island of Kos
because its fishermen and farm-
ers had an easier time of it. Pan-
ayiotopoulos excelled in his
studies and was able to train as a
medic at the military school in
Thessaloniki, after which he
went to Birmingham to study
neurology.
He chose to specialise in the
study and treatment of epilepsy
because “from the early stages
of my medical career, I was im-
pressed by the kindness, loyalty,
patience, and unmet needs of
children and patients with epi-
leptic seizures. I was also ad-
versely impressed, frustrated,
and sometimes angry that tradi-
tional medical teaching and atti-
tudes to the diagnosis and man-
agement of epilepsies often dif-
fered from those applied in
other medical conditions.”
He saw that doctors were lazi-
ly lumping together several dif-

ferent kinds of epilepsy, thereby
forcing many patients to under-
go unnecessary treatment.
He discovered that many
children were undergoing dras-
tic chemical and surgical treat-
ment to be cured of a form of
epilepsy that was largely harm-
less, and which goes away of its
own accord after a few years.
Many researchers in his field
were hostile to his purported
discovery of this “Panayioto-
poulos syndrome”, but he was
later vindicated by several large
clinical studies.
The neurologist authored or
co-authored
over 140 papers
about epilepsy,
and co-wrote
The Atlas of Ep-
ilepsies and A
Clinical Guide
to Epileptic
Syndromes and
Their Treat-
ment. He
would work on
these publica-
tions late into
the night, sift-
ing through a
snowdrift of
data sheets,
leaving his
cigarette to smoulder forgotten
in an ashtray. As well as identify-
ing Panayiotopoulos syndrome
he also described another form
of epilepsy, and F-wave chrono-
dispersion, a highly sensitive
measurement of motor nerve
conduction. His strong work
ethic was driven not only by a
sense of obligation to help
people, but an irritation that
some of his colleagues seemed
not to take that obligation as se-
riously as they should.
Alongside his academic work
he was for nearly 20 years a con-
sultant in clinical neurophysiol-
ogy and epilepsies at St Thomas’
Hospital London. He lived in
Dulwich, south London, with
his wife Thalia (née Valeta), an
actress and writer whom he had
met in Athens through a mutual
friend. They had one son, Paris,
a senior managing director at

Blackstone, an investment firm,
and Sophia, who is a stay-at-
home mother. Both survive him,
as does Thalia. In later life Pan-
ayiotopoulos would visit Sophia
almost every weekend, and
Paris, who lives in Boston, for
several weeks a year. In the taxi
from the airport, he would ask
the driver about their life, and
call them sir or madam, as
indeed he did everyone in the
service industry.
He enjoyed going for walks in
the countryside with his child-
ren, and when ill health raised
the prospect of not being able to
do so any
more, he
made it clear
that he did
not want to
be a burden
on them. In
one of his last
emails to
Paris, he told
him that
“what is im-
portant to me
is quality of
life, not
length of life”.
When he saw
on his bedside
monitor that
he was having a heart attack, he
told the doctor not to resuscitate
— he did not want to wake up
with brain damage.
Every year, weary from at-
tending to his patients, Panayio-
topoulos would take a holiday
on the island of Spetses. Once
there he would invariably find a
queue of islanders who had
heard of his coming, and who
sought treatment but could
offer nothing more than a bottle
of home-pressed olive oil in
return. Panayiotopoulos made
sure he saw them all.

Professor Chrysostomos
Panayiotopoulos, neurologist,
was born on January 31, 1938. He
died of a heart attack on June 9,
2020, aged 82
