S

omething interesting has
happened to Shetland on
BBC weather maps: it is no
longer stuck in a box on its
own. Now it sits proudly with
the rest of the country, although
separated by an expanse of sea.
Two years ago, the Islands
(Scotland) Act made a “Shetland
mapping requirement” compulsory
to liberate the islands from their box
in the top right-hand corner of maps
published by public authorities.
Map makers had argued that the
boxes were useful, an argument
backed up by the Ordnance Survey
mapping agency, which said that
inset boxes avoid “publishing maps
which are mostly sea”. As a
spokesman for the company pointed
out: “The Shetland Islands are
approximately 245km (152 miles)
from the Scottish mainland, from
the most northerly part of the
Shetland Islands to John o’Groats,
and 690km (428 miles) from the
most southerly point of the Scottish
and English border.”
Consisting of more than 100
islands, 15 of them inhabited,
Shetland stretches about 100 miles
from north to south and the most
northerly island, Unst, is as far north
as Anchorage in Alaska. The capital,
Lerwick, is only 18 miles nearer to
Aberdeen than to Bergen, Norway,
Its geographical location makes
the climate of Shetland fascinating.
The first tourist guide to the islands
published after the First World War
described it in a pithy sentence:
“The weather in Shetland can be
good, and sometimes it is.” It is one
of the stormiest places in Europe, as
the islands bear the brunt of fierce
Atlantic gales, and in a year wind
speeds average about force 4.
Yet the range of average
temperatures over a year in
Shetland is very narrow. It rarely
gets very hot or very cold and the
summers are predominantly
showery and cool. The record for
the highest temperature was 27.8C
on August 6, 1910 at Sumburgh
Head. Another quirk of the islands’
climate is that rainfall averages just
1,037mm (41in) a year, only half the
total for Fort William in the
western Highlands.
