Mikel Arteta is growing in confidence
that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will
stay at Arsenal having urged the club to
finalise his contract.
The striker, 31, has scored five times
in his past six games including twice in
the victory over Manchester City to
take Arsenal to the FA Cup final. Aub-
ameyang has entered the final year of
his deal, worth £190,000 a week, and
wanted a new and improved three-year
contract to stay. His position has
changed in recent months since
he told Arsenal he wanted to
leave, partly in recognition
of Arteta’s impact on the
team, and also because
teams that might have
bid for him have had
transfer budgets cut by
the impact of the coro-
navirus crisis.
“With Auba, I think I’ve
been very clear with what I
want,” Arteta said. “The quick-
er we do it, for me personally, the
better because the player will be more
focused, more determined and more
calm. But we have to respect the
timings and the needs of the football
club.”
Aubameyang opened the scoring
against City after an 18-pass move,
eight of which were within their own
penalty area. Arteta, whose side face
Aston Villa in the Premier League this
evening, said that he encouraged his

team to take risks. “I get nervous when
we kick the ball long,” he said. “The
quicker it goes there, the quicker it
comes back. I’d rather do that with the
right structure, the right timing and
using the right spaces. It’s something
that we have to do more often.”
If Villa are beaten by Arsenal and
Watford avoid defeat against Manches-
ter City in tonight’s other game, Dean
Smith’s team will be relegated. If Villa
can get a better result than Watford
tonight, they will still be capable of sur-
vival going into their final game of the
season at West Ham United on Sunday.
Smith said that the financial
backing of the club’s co-own-
ers — who are both billion-
aires — the American
Wes Edens, who also
owns the Milwaukee
Bucks NBA team, and
the Egyptian business-
man Nassef Sawiris –
would ensure that Villa
were in a strong position
even if they are relegated.
“The short-term future of the
club is not in jeopardy at all. If we
get relegated it’s one of those things
we’d have to deal with. We’re in great
hands with the owners we have got. But
we all want to keep our Premier League
status,” Smith said.
“We are very fortunate that we have
two billionaire owners who have been
fantastic. But we also know what is at
stake and how ambitious they are. If we
remain in the Premier League we have
certainly got the power to compete.”

Toronto pull

out of the

Super League

Rugby league

Toronto Wolfpack will not restart the
Super League season after withdrawing
from the competition because of
“overwhelming financial challenges”.
The league’s only transatlantic club
had been due to resume the 2020
campaign against Hull Kingston Rovers
on August 2 and their decision to pull
out drew a strong response from Super
League and the RFL.
In a joint statement, they said: “Super
League Europe and the RFL have been
in dialogue with Toronto regarding the
club’s ability to take part in the competi-
tion and firm assurances had been
received as recently as last Thursday.
The club’s decision is especially
disappointing given the imminent
restart of the season.”
Despite the high-profile signing of
Sonny Bill Williams, Toronto had lost
the first six matches of their debut
top-flight season. Toronto said that
they would work with Super League
and the RFL to “understand the
process” of moving into next season.
Featherstone Rovers had expressed
an interest in taking Toronto’s place.
However, the RFL confirmed last night
that this Super League season is to have
no relegation and this year’s
Championship and League 1 cam-
paigns will not resume.
Instead, second and third-tier clubs
will be invited to play in a competition
this autumn, which has a £250,000
prize pot.
