while poor old Coren
gets the short straw
again: changing toilet

for their daily loch

most year-round

Amazing Hotels:

Life Beyond

The Lobby
BBC Two, 8pm

Monica Galetti and
Giles Coren visit
the Torridon in the
Scottish Highlands
and find amazing views
of lochs, mountains
and cows nibbling
miles of greenery.
Galetti busies herself
collecting seaweed for

waits in his gran’s flat
for her arrival and the
chance to see his baby
brother on his first
birthday is extremely
affecting. These two
stories are powerful
reminders of the
absolute dependence
children have on those
who brought them into
the world — and the
damage that can be
done when they are not
looked after properly.

Leslie, who lives with
his mum and idolises
his father, who was in
prison when he was
growing up. Just as
touching is the story
of Brendan, a sweet,
extremely articulate
boy with heaps of
personality and a
desperate longing for
love and attention from
his feckless-seeming
mum. The moment
when he desperately

when he was younger,
boys were a bit
naughty, the Old Bill
always felt your collar
and everything was
a bit more yuppie-free
and cosy. At one point
he actually shows us
a “good old knees up”
round the Ol’ Joanna.
Where this film
succeeds is in the case
studies, particularly the
younger ones. These
include 12-year-old

skin of the modern
islanders, and he
partially succeeds,
although perhaps in
spite of and not because
of his main contributor,
Hak Baker. Baker
seems a delightful man,
happily wandering the
streets with his guitar
singing songs and
watching life. But his
narration is a little too
overladen with clichés
about the good old days
