MERCURY TRIBUTE
CONCERT AT
WEMBLEY STADIUM

20 APRIL 1992
After Freddie Mercury died in November 1991, the remaining
members of Queen began planning a concert that would not only pay
tribute to their fallen frontman, but also raise awareness of the disease
that claimed him. The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was broadcast
live on TV and radio to 76 countries around the world, reaching an
estimated audience of more than one billion. The fi rst half was given
over to rock bands, including Guns N’ Roses and Def Leppard, that were
infl uenced by Queen. But it was the second half that proved the most
poignant, as the surviving members of the group journeyed through their
back catalogue with a rolling lineup of guest singers, including Elton
John, David Bowie, Lisa Stansfi eld, George Michael, Seal, Paul Young
and Annie Lennox. The show would prove to be bassist John Deacon’s
fi nal full-length concert with Queen. Steve O’Brien
