This happens often,

I don’t t hink you are losing

Dear Amy: I am a m iddle-aged
woman who lives alone.
I have a beloved pet. I w ork
from home.
Before the pandemic, I had very
limited interaction with the
public, by choice, but did go o ut
freely on errands and shopping
trips.
I consider myself a v ery cordial
and p leasant p erson when
encountering p eople.
Since the pandemic, my
exposure to the o utside world i s
close t o nil, and I have d eveloped
a bizarre habit that worries me.
Where I always h ad the habit of
talking t o my s weet pet in an
overly sweet type o f “baby talk,” I
have noticed t hat I have carried
this over t o everyday areas o f my
life, a lmost like a narrative of
sorts: “ Oh, I ’m w ashing my f ace,
Ohhhhh! A nd we don’t h ave a

It r eminds me that most of u s

and p olite b ehavior at w ork, w hen

I agree with your perceptive
assessment that your wife’s r ude

actually “winning” at w ork. S he

with her the v estiges of constant

If challenged, she might agree

I’m at a l oss about h ow to

Should I just keep my m outh

She’s p robably a year away f rom

to change, but she’s a lways
frustrated and crabby at t he end of
the day, a nd I know a large part of
that is how she conducts herself.
— Jaw Dropped in Denver

Jaw Dropped in Denver: I’m
assuming that your wife’s
behavior also surfaces during
your domestic life. Is s he r ude t o
wait staff at r estaurants, p rickly
toward medical personnel, o r
impatient and imperious when
negotiating h ome repairs with
service workers? D oes she talk
over you in an effort t o get the
upper hand i n a conversation?
Perhaps you a ssumed t hat she
would behave differently (as most
of us do) when at w ork.

Dear Amy:
Working at h ome

She is often rude t o her
customers and co-workers, w ith a
particularly annoying habit of
loudly talking over them to try to
gain the v erbal u pper h and. S he
also frequently battles with her
boss instead of trying t o work to
mutually agreeable solutions.
I’ve tried to offer suggestions
and t echniques from my y ears of
corporate experience b ut am
waved off.
The company she works for is
small, poorly r un, and the level of
professionalism is generally low,
which i s why I’m sure she wasn’t

telling me how vast your
computer knowledge is!
Dear Readers: As the summer
carries on, and covid-19 is still in
full swing, it’s important not to
get complacent and careless
about prevention. Here are some
reminders:
l Throughout the day, wash
your hands often for 20 seconds
with soap and water.
l Keep your distance from
others; six feet is recommended.
l Wearing face masks is vital
to protect you and others.

— Ginny in Texas

Ginny in Texas: I bet your
grandchildren would love to
teach you Computer 101, or they
can find a tech person in your
area who can give you some
pointers. Or, when you have an
Internet provider, use a search
engine to pose a question about
computer learning. The
keyboard on your computer is
more or less the same as a
typewriter.
Don’t be afraid; give it a whirl,
and I’ll expect an email from you

on saving up cash, or you could
gift the person a portion of the
money, but the risks for co-sign-
ing are numerous.

Dear Heloise: I want to learn
how to use my computer that my
grandkids gave me for my
birthday. They tell me there’s so
much I can do on it: compose a
letter, do my banking and bill-
paying, chat with my friends and
family on social media sites,
research new and delicious
recipes and even play games.
But learning about it seems
overwhelming, and I don’t know

Be aware that the creditor can
collect from you first, before col-
lecting from the borrower. The
creditor may take action against
you, including filing a lawsuit
against you and even garnishing
your paycheck or bank account.
What a mess!
Never pledge items to secure
this loan, such as your car, jewelry
or furniture. If the loan doesn’t
get paid, you could lose this prop-
erty.
It’s okay to say no. “No” is a
complete sentence! Instead, you
might offer the person some hints

Dear Readers:
What happens if
someone you
know, a friend or
family member, asks you to co-
sign a loan? Most financial advis-
ers will discourage you from say-
ing yes. Why? Let’s take a look.
According to the Federal Trade
Commission (ftc.gov), when you
co-sign a loan, you are saying that
regardless of any situation, this
loan will be paid. But what if the
borrower cannot pay and you
don’t have the money to do so
either? If the payment is late, fees
and penalties can accrue, which
