t was on this day 15 years ago
that a monstrous thunderstorm
descended on Birmingham.
People watched in horror as a
huge black funnel-shaped cloud
smashed its way through the
suburbs of Kings Heath, Moseley,
Balsall Heath and Sparkbrook.
The tornado carved a path of
devastation 11km (6.8 miles) long
that looked like the aftermath of a
bomb blast: houses were torn open,
roofs flew off, buildings collapsed,
more than 1,000 trees fell and
19 people were injured — although
amazingly no one was killed. The
damage was about £39 million.
“The winds started to pick up and
then tiles began to fly off roofs and
smash into windows. Huge trees have
been uprooted and complete roofs
have been ripped off houses,” Reefat
Batul, a resident of Sparkbrook, told
BBC News.
Jane Trobridge, who was working
in Small Heath, also told BBC News:
“Suddenly everything started
blowing upwards. I tried to get out
to get a better look but I couldn’t
actually force the door open. I could
see loads of flying debris circling,
and then the roof seemed to lift off
the petrol station... Behind it there
were trees and bricks flying about. It
was madness; cars being lifted up,
flagpoles snapped off at their bases.”
The winds in the tornado were
estimated at more than 140mph, far
more violent than the storm that hit
Britain in October 1987. What made
this tornado so devastating was how
it was spawned from a type of
thunderstorm called a supercell, the
storms typically seen in “Tornado
Alley” in the American Midwest.
These are more powerful and last
longer than an ordinary storm,
driven on by high-level winds, and
the tornados they produce in the US
can cause death and destruction.
The supercell storm and tornado
in Birmingham was created as hot
and humid air from the Tropics
collided with colder, drier air from
the north. As winds at different
levels in the atmosphere rushed in
from different directions they set the
storm cloud rotating and a core of
air spun even faster, descending
from the thundercloud as a tornado.Weather Eye
