Mark Johnston’s runners always
need to be watched at this meeting and
King Zain can give the Middleham
handler a fifth win in the Veuve
Clicquot Vintage Stakes (2.15). He
looked a good prospect when making a
successful debut at Kempton but was
disappointing when stepped up to this
grade at Newmarket last time.
However, Johnston believes that

Santiago can edge clash of generations

Racing fans have had to wait unusually

long for a clash between the genera-

tions but the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup

(3.15) today provides a fascinating

contest between the reigning cham-

pion Stradivarius and the Irish Derby

winner Santiago. The latter is fancied to

cause an upset.

The Eclipse Stakes is traditionally the

first time that the classic generation

tackle their elders. In this revamped

season, though, that race was not open

to the three-year-olds, who then

declined the chance to tackle Enable in

the King George on Saturday.

Stradivarius, like Enable, comes from

the yard of John Gosden and he has

dominated the staying division since

winning this prize for the first time in

  1. He looked better than ever when

making light of the testing conditions to

win a third Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last

month by ten lengths.

He is clearly the one to beat as he tries

to become the first horse to win this

prize four times but could it be a case of

history repeating itself in another way?

In 2017 Big Orange, fresh from a Gold

Cup win, was a warm order to land this

race for a third time but he was unable

to cope with the up-and-coming three-
year-old Stradivarius, who had landed
the Queen’s Vase at Ascot on his previ-
ous start. Stradivarius has developed
into a much better horse but, at the
same stages of their careers, the Aidan
O’Brien-trained Santiago boasts
stronger form than Stradivarius did.
Like Stradivarius, he won the
Queen’s Vase — rather more easily,
too — but more importantly Santi-
ago has since shown sufficient speed
to win the Irish Derby at the
Curragh.
At this time of the year the three-
year-olds get a generous weight
allowance from older horses and
time may tell that Stradivarius has
a really stiff task in attempting to
concede 15lb to Santiago.
This will be the first time that San-
tiago has tackled two miles but he was
strong at the line when winning over
two furlongs shorter at Ascot and there
is every chance that he could improve
for this longer trip. He is 5-2 with
William Hill to see off the champion.
Those two rightly dominate the
betting but Eagles By Day is an interest-
ing outsider. He looked an improved
performer on his first start since
moving to the trainer David O’Meara

when winning easily at York and he is
bred to relish this stiffer test of stamina.
O’Meara could be on the mark
earlier on the card through Tinandali in
the Unibet You’re On Handicap (1.45).
He has shaped well on all three starts
since joining O’Meara from Ireland
and ran much better than the result
suggests when a luckless fifth in the
John Smith’s Cup at York last time.

“everything went wrong” for his colt
there, adding: “He got upset in the stalls
— he’s a huge horse and was in there for
a long time — and then in the race he
missed the break and was stuck
in behind and never got room
to get racing.”
King Zain is well worth
another chance to confirm
the promise of his debut at
the 9-1 generally on offer.
A strong pace looks
likely for the Qatar Hand-
icap (3.45), with most of the
field at their best when
forcing the early gallop, and that
could set up the race for Well Done
Fox. The latter was twice a winner at
listed company as a juvenile but was
restricted to just two starts last year.
He has had excuses on all three
starts since a close fourth on his
reappearance at Newmarket last
month and could prove a cut above his
rivals here.
Asiaaf can land the British EBF
Fillies’ Handicap (4.55). She showed
her liking for this track when successful
here last month and perhaps went for
home too soon when collared late on at
Sandown last time. Still unexposed, she
can get back to winning ways here.
