It’s the final visit of the
three-part series and
our presenters Monica
Galetti and Giles Coren
are pretty bowled over
by Schloss Elmau,
a Disneyesque haven
of romantic perfection
nestled in the snowy
Bavarian Alps. It’s one

feeder lines and chase
sequences. Still, caveats
aside, Sheen relishes
his role and does a fine
line in psychopathy that
has a touch of Anthony
Hopkins about it. As
Malcolm, Tom Payne
captures the intensity
of a man who still
suffers night terrors
thanks to his unusual
childhood. Granted, it’s
a strange double act,
but I’ve seen worse.

tips from his dad, who
is incarcerated in
Hannibal Lecter-style
isolation in a gothic-
looking prison and
keen to reconnect
with his son? He sure
should. There’s a nice
noirish look and feel to
the central story, even
if the supporting action
is conventional, buddy-
cop fodder, with Gil
and junior cops Dani
and JT supplying droll

methodology of killers.
However, in scenes
designed to show
Malcolm’s unusual
professional methods,
he’s soon fired by the
bureau and recruited
by his former NYPD
mentor Gil (Lou
Diamond Phillips)
to work on a case that
appears to involve
a copycat of the
Surgeon’s best work.
Should Malcolm get

but not unenjoyable
new US drama. They
would be strange words
at the best of times, but
here they are creepy
because Martin is a
serial killer known as
“the Surgeon” who is
about to be carted off
by the cops. We next
find Malcolm grown up
and working for the FBI
as a criminal profiler
who clearly learnt a lot
from his dad about the
