Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.
How you rate 11 words, average;
15, good; 19, very good; 24, excellent

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

North-South did well to reach
3NT after East-West’s barrage bid-
ding. West led a somewhat reluc-
tant two of spades (but swap the
king and queen of spades, and fail-
ing to lead a spade would not be so
clever). Declarer beat East’s ten
with the king and at trick two
crossed to the ace of clubs.
When East’s queen of clubs
appeared, declarer used restricted-
choice thinking to place the jack of
clubs with West (East might have
played the jack from the queen-
jack). She crossed to the ace of dia-

monds and led a second club to
West nine and dummy’s ... ten.
Phew, East discarded and
declarer could now run all the
clubs. She then cashed the king of
diamonds and, in this ingenious
endgame, crossed to her queen of
diamonds.

If East discarded a heart, declarer
could next lead the queen to pin
his jack; so East let go a spade. If
West discarded a heart, declarer
could lead the ten of hearts to the
(king and) ace and cross to her

promoted queen. So West also dis-
carded a spade, choosing the ace
to avoid being endplayed.
At trick 11, declarer exited with
her spade. East won the queen and
led a heart but declarer inserted
the ten, beating West’s king with
the ace and crossing to her queen.
That was an amazing 12 tricks —
and a top. The joy of the frozen
heart suit — there was nothing the
defence could do to prevent 12
tricks — after West had led a

(1) Disciplined pass — the good intermedi-
ates do tempt one into a cheeky 1NT opener.
The vulnerability, however, is off-putting.
( 2 ) Negative, showing hearts.
(3) Raising pre-emptively to the (nine-card)
level of the fit.
(4) Action (not penalty after the opponents
have bid and supported). “Do something
sensible, partner.”
(5) That sensible something is 3NT — with
the king of spades stopping the suit (the
lead coming from her left).
