rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the

the grid, so that
the six sums

should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

What is your favourite ever deal?
Do email me to let me know.
Graeme Knox from Stirling
emailed me with his favourite.
Admittedly, he did not play it him-
self, rather saw it reported in a US
newspaper some 20 years ago.
West leads the queen of dia-
monds v 6 ♠ and you as declarer
win the ace and try to pick up
spades without loss, crossing to the
king and returning to the jack.
West wins the queen and persists
with the jack of diamonds.
You ruff in hand and cash the
ace of spades, discarding a club
from dummy. Now what?
You count ten top tricks via five
spades, two hearts, two diamonds
and one club. It appears you need
the club finesse — which if suc-
cessful (East holding the king) will
generate the necessary two extra
tricks. The heart suit is less
promising, for you will need a
favourable split as well as a suc-
cessful finesse of the jack to make
the two extra tricks you need.
However, before committing
yourself to clubs (crossing to
dummy and running dummy’s
queen), there is an extra chance in

yy

hearts. Cross to the ace-king of
hearts. If nothing happens, you can
always shed your third heart on
dummy’s king of diamonds, and run
the queen of clubs.
The extra chance is East hold-
ing♥Qx. His queen will appear on
the second round, and you can
now cross to the ace of clubs and
lead your third heart to dummy’s
nine. You can dispose of your two
remaining clubs on the jack of
hearts and king of diamonds, and

congratulate yourself on finding
that extra chance.
And, hey presto, when you cross
to the ace-king of hearts, the
queen does indeed drop from East.
With that warm, smug feeling of
self-congratulation, you cross to
the ace of clubs and lead a third
spade to the nine ...
And, talking of the warm, smug
feeling of self-congratulation, East
wins the ten and cashes the king of
clubs. Two down.
East has found a brilliant false-
card. He knows if he does nothing
(ie follows with a low heart and
the ten of hearts), you’ll discard
your remaining heart on the king
of diamonds, and fall back on the
club finesse, which he knows will
work. So he drops the queen.
As Victor Mollo’s Rueful Rabbit
might have said, “Sorry, partner, my
cards were sticky and I didn’t know I
had the ten of hearts until too late.”
