A front will sweep a line of thunder-
storms across much of the Northeast and
the Mid-Atlantic. Thunderstorms, espe-
cially those in the afternoon and evening
hours, will have the potential to bring
gusty winds, as well as heavy downpours
that may cause flash flooding. The North-
east Interstate-95 corridor will be particu-
larly susceptible. Behind the drenching
thunderstorms, a new air mass will bring in
cooler air and less humidity to the Great
Lakes and Northern Plains.
In the center of the country, a stalled

front will allow for rounds of thunder-

storms from the southern Appalachians

back to the Colorado Rockies. Thunder-

storms here will be capable of producing

drenching downpours that could cause

flash flooding. Afternoon thunderstorms

will also fire up elsewhere across South-

east and South-Central areas.

Across the West, heat and mostly dry

weather will continue. Monsoonal thun-

derstorms will fire across the mountainous

terrain of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah,

especially in the afternoon and evening.

Late-day thunderstorms will also fire up in

parts of Oregon and Northern California;

these thunderstorms are expected to have

less moisture with them and the lightning

they produce could bring an increased fire

risk to the region.

FOCUS: TEMPERATURE CONTRAST LATE

THIS WEEK High pressure in the upper

atmosphere will strengthen over the interi-

or West later this week. This will lead to a

surge of extreme heat over the Southwest.

Farther east, an abnormally cool air mass

will dive south through the Plains.
