He had manypassions,includingfamily,food
and travel,whichwerealwaysbest enjoyed
together.Hewas alover of classical,or as he
said “serious”,music.Yet Susanwas able to
expandhis horizonsso that “serious”music
somehowincludedthe bluesand the Beatles.
We alwaysenjoyedhis tonguein cheek
poemspennedfor familycelebrations.While
he had manyotherpassions,his numberone
passionwas doingeverythingwith Susan.
Family vacationswerecherished.Whether
togetherin the summerat aseashore,ora
wintertrip to somewherewarmand sunny,
as longas his childrenand grandchildren
werearoundhim,he was happyand content.
Albertand Susanhavethreewonderfulchil-
dren,Carl,Adamand Robin,and he leaves
them,theirspousesLisa, Martaand Will, and
eightgrandchildren.
Elevenyearsago he wrote:“Whoelse has
had alife moreblessedthan mine?”Despite
declininghealth,his outlookneverchanged.
We will misshim so much.

his side.
He was bornin Philadelphiato Georgeand
BelleSchultzand was the youngestof four
brothers.
1953 wasthe mostconsequentialyearof
his life.That’swhen he metSusanon a
blinddate.They spentalmosteveryday of
the next67 yearstogether.Ifthey weren’t
together,they wroteeachotherlettersevery
day.Later in life,hewrotethat whilehe
thoughthimselfan atheist,he wasn’tentirely
sure,because“I knowfor certainthat God
sent one of his angels”to sharelife with him.
He earnedhis undergraduatedegreeat the
Universityof Rochesteron an NROTC schol-
arship.After servingin the Navy,summer
workat Bell Labsand earninghis PhDat
Yale in 1962,he pursuedavery successful
careerin MechanicalEngineeringand Bio-
mechanics.Helovedteachingand research.
He wonawardsfor bothfromthe U. of
Illinoisat Chicagoand the U. of Michigan.In
1983,the U. of M. namedhim the Vennema
Professorof MechanicalEngineering.He
helpedfoundand was the presidentof many
professionalorganizations.In1993, he was
honoredto be inductedinto the National

at homeon June3, 2020,just shortof his
93rdbirthday.Heleavesbehindwifeof 66
years,Eva; son,Joe (Rhonda);daughters,
Maria(David);and Veronica(Rob);as well as
grandsons,Corey(Jasmine);Evan;and Colin.
Includedin his fan clubare several nieces,
nephewsandcommunityof 42 yearsat
DahlgrenChapel,GeorgetownUniversity.He
leavesour worldalittle colder,alot quieter
and with muchless humor.
Leo’speacefuldeparturefor his nextadven-
ture is the fulfillmentof ablessedlife.Born
in Brooklyn,NY,heand oldersisterNina
survivedthe GreatDepressionthanksto
immigrant Sicilianparents,Joe and Rose.In
1945,at 17, he volunteeredfor the Seabees
branchof the Navyand wasdeployedto
the Pacific just as Japan surrendered—which
was,heused to joke,becausetheysaw him
coming!
Leo attendedthe Schoolof IndustrialArts
in Manhattan,NY and was first in his family
to attendcollege—thanksto the GI Bill. He
choseRhodeIslandSchoolof Designwhere
he earnedhis BFAand won the heartof the
mostbeautifulwomanthere;equallygifted
painterand sculptor,Eva Amann.As ayoung
husbandandfather,heearnedhisMFAfrom
IndianaUniversity,Bloomington,wherehe
studiedundertheartistsDavidSmithand
JackTworkov.
