August 1, 1974.John D. Ehrlichman, who served as President Nixon’s domestic policy
chief, received a prison sentence for his role in what Judge Gerhard A. Gesell called “a
shameful episode in the history of this country,” The Times reported. Ehrlichman was
convicted of charges related to a break-in at the office of the former psychiatrist of Daniel
Ellsberg, who released the “Pentagon Papers” in 1971. Five months later, Ehrlichman was
convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice and perjury for his involvement in the
Watergate scandal. He served 18 months on sentences that ran concurrently.
