to his professionalendeavors.Hewas a
lovingandloyalfriend,instigator,andaccom-
plice.Heembraced life and work with pas-
sion,dedication,and pride.Healways made
timeforothers.Heputthose inneedbefore
himself,whetherit was elderlyneighbors
who neededtrash taken out or astranger
who neededhelp moving.Heepitomizeda
life of service-tohis country,his state,his
neighbors,and the friends he called family.
Brian had an unique ability to find the best
in every person he met, resultingin lifelong
friendshipseverywherehewent.
He lived life fully,never saying no to agood
adventure.Itwas not uncommonfor Brian
to show up for any invitation-nomatter the
miles,distance,ortime.Henever wanted
to miss an opportunity.Brian spent his free
time enjoyinglive music,cycling (in the gym
and on the road), touring on his motorcycle,
eating and servinggood food, BEER, and his
adoptedhometownof San Diego.Whatever
hewasdoinghewasfullycommitted,witha
smileonhisface.
Althoughhe was precededin death by his
mom and dad, Brian’sspirit lives on in
his extendedfamily,a‘family’of friends
he selectedpersonally,all those he men-
tored,andeveryonehetouched.ON-ON,my
friend...untilwemeetagain.
Brian will be interredwith Full MilitaryHon-
ors.AcelebrationofBrian’slifewillbeheldin

Brian D. Anderson,51, passedaway peace-
fullyovertheweekendofJuly4,2020, athis
homeinSacramento,CA.
At the time of his death, Brian was serving
as the PersonnelDirector(J1) and the XO
of the CaliforniaState Guard.He provided
akey leadershiprole in the restructuring
of the CaliforniaNationalGuard, the COVID-
19 pandemicresponse,and civil unrest
responsefor the CaliforniaNationalGuard.
Prior to his appointmentwith the State,he
served several combattours,includingtours
in Iraq and Kosovo where he workedon
nation buildingand supportingdemocractic
institutionsaroundtheglobe.Hewasaward-
ed numerousservicemedalsand citations
includingthe BronzeStar and California
Legion of Merit (posthumous)for his faithful
service.

CUAappointedhimAssociateProfessor,and
in 1968 promotedhim to Professor,which
he held until 1971. In 1969, the Smithsonian
appointedhim AssociateCurator of Naval
History.While holdingthat position,he was
also an AdjunctProfessorat CUAbeginning
in1971.
In 1965,he marriedPatriciaAnn Piccola.The
couple settled in Arlington,VA and had two
children.
In 1996, he retired from the Smithsonian,
and continuedteachingat CUAuntil 2001.
After he retired from teaching,he remained
active in the historyfield, writingarticles
for historicaljournals,reviewingbooks,and
workingonabook.Healsotraveledregularly
to history conferencesin the United States,
contributingpresentationsand helpingwith
others.
In 2017, he was diagnosedwith dementia
and curtailedhis travels to conferences.
Despitethe challengesthis conditionpre-
sented,he continuedwritingarticlesand
book reviewsfor historicalpublications.As
his conditionprogressed,he movedto an
assistedlivingfacilityinAlexandria,VA inlate
2019,wherehelivedfortheremainderofhis
life.
Heissurvivedbyhissister,DorothySweeney,
of Albany,NY; his brother,Roger Langley,of
Rockville,MD; his son, David Langley,of
Alexandria,VA;hisdaughter,ErikaLangley,of
Bremerton,WA;and many nieces,nephews
and cousins,along with their families.His
wife,Patricia,predeceasedhimin2013.

HAROLDD. LANGLEY
Harold D. Langley,diplomaticand naval his-
torian who was AssociateCurator of naval
historyat the SmithsonianInstitutionfrom
1969 to 1996, died on Wednesday,July 29,
2020 after an extendedillness.Hewas 95.
As anaval historian,he was apioneer in
exploringAmericannaval social and medical
history.
Born Harold David Langley,the son ofWalter
B. Langleyand Anna Mae McCaffreyand
the fourth of six children,he grew up in
Amsterdam,NY.Upon his graduationfrom
high school,he was drafted into theArmy of
the United States and served from 1943 to
1946,receiving,alongwithhisunit,theArmy
MeritoriousServiceMedal and the Asiatic-
Pacific CampaignMedal. After his military
service,heattendedthe CatholicUniversity
of America(CUA), where he earned his B.A.
in 1950. He then earnedhis M.A. in 1951,
and his Ph.D.in1960, from the Universityof
Pennsylvania,the latter with adissertation
whichbecamehisfirstpublishedbook,Social
ReformintheUnitedStatesNavy,1798-1862.
He began his professionalcareerat the
Library of Congress,ManuscriptsDivision,in
Washington,DC in 1951. After workingas
amanuscriptspecialistin Washingtonand
Pennsylvania,in 1955, MarywoodCollege
in Scranton, Pennsylvania,appointedhim
AssistantProfessorof history.Hewas next
appointedas aDiplomaticHistorianin the
U.S.DepartmentofStatein1957.In1964,

and regaledthe audiencewith stories of his
eight kids,noting, “My youngestdaughter

After PresidentKennedy’sassassination,R.
SargentShriverhiredDickasAssistantDirec-
tor of Public Affairs for the newly launched
OfficeofEconomicOpportunity,whichcreat-
ed VISTA, Job Corps,and Head Start. From
1967 to 1969, Dick producedand co-hosted
withPeteyGreenetheEmmyAward-winning
public affairs program “WhereIt’sAt” on
WETA-TV.“Me and the white boy,” Greene
wroteinhisautobiography,“usedtoreallygo
at it on television.People would be amazed
becausewe could really get hot at each
other.And in the dressingroom, we would
coolout,youknow.Hewasreallyagoodguy,
DickMcCormack.”
In 1970, Dick marriedCarolineTrucano,a
former nun, and moved to Puerto Rico for
two years to train Peace Corps volunteers.
He returnedto Washingtonas the Public
Affairs Officerfor NASA’s Office of Space
and TerrestrialApplicationsand its fledgling
space shuttleprogram. In 1982, Dick, now
the father of ten kids,bought 30 acres in
Virginia’sShenandoahValley and spent his
weekendsplanting8,000grapevineswiththe
help of his friend Brad Johnston.In 1988, he
launchedtheaward-winningNorthMountain
Vineyard&Winery,which he sold in 2002.
From 1984 until his retirementin 1995,
Dick served as the Directorfor Community
Servicesat the DefenseDepartment’sBallis-
ticMissileDefenseOrganization.
Alwaysready for the next adventure,Dick
donatedhis body to GeorgetownUniversity
School of Medicine.Acelebration of his life
will be held in apost-pandemicworld in
whichwecanraiseaglassofNorthMountain
Vineyardwine and dance to Sinatraafter a
memorialMass at Good ShepherdCatholic

DickservedintheNavyfrom1945to1949as
assistantto the chaplainof the USS Macon.
While in the Mediterranean, he finagleda
privateaudienceforhisshipmateswithPope
Pius XII. He marriedMavis Anne Blackburn
in 1946; they were divorcedin 1968. He
was the father of four when he graduated
StonehillCollegein 1953 as vice president
of the school’ssecond graduatingclass.Six
decadeslater,inaprofileinStonehill’salumni
magazine,Dickcapsulizedhisloveoflifeand
sense of adventurewith the observation,
“There’salways somethingexcitingto do in
thisworld.”
Dick was an editor at the CIA’s Foreign
BroadcastInformationServicefrom 1953
to 1956. After researchingMassachusetts’
solidly Republican13th congressionaldis-
trict, he ranfor office.In1956, Sen. John
Kennedyaskedhowhiscampaignwasgoing.
“I told him Ineeded two things: money and
prayers.” Kennedy responded,“I’ll pray for
you.”Dick lost by less than 300 votes.After
servingas SpecialAssistantto Mass.Gov.
Foster Furcolo,Dick returnedto Washington
in 1958 as SpecialAssistantto Sen. Vance
Hartke before joining Kennedy’spresidential
campaignas an advanceman. He served
on the Inaugural Committeeas Directorof
Transportationand, from 1961 to 1963, as
DeputyAssistantSecretaryof Treasury for
CongressionalRelations.
TwoweeksafterpoliticalsatiristMarkRussell
broughtawriter for NBC’s“The Tonight
Show” to see his friend from the Treasury
Departmentsing at the Carroll Arms Hotel
in October1962, Johnny Carson invited Dick

Uncle Gene was very involvedin the Wash-

directedplays at CatholicUniversity,was
executivedirectorand board memberof the
Olney theater,and was ajudge and eventual
chairfortheHelenHayesTheaterAwards.
HereceivedtheLifetimeAchievementaward
at CatholicUniversityand was the first
inducteeinto the St. John's CollegeHigh
School TheaterHall of Fame,est. 2015. At
the inaugural celebration of the SJC Hall of
Fame he was honoredwith the unveiling
of The Gene Morrill Black Box Theater.This
gestureexpressesthe importanceof the St.
John's communityin his life and the life-long
relationshipsthatsproutedfromthoseyears.
When asked,and also not asked,Uncle
Gene acted with love as aminister,financial
advisor,teacher,loan officer,director,men-
tor,and friend. His love for children,poker,
the ocean, and the MinnesotaVikingswas
only outdoneby his love for friends,family,
and chocolateice cream. He will be remem-
bered for his stubbornness,humor,intelli-
gence,andgenerosity.Hecanbehonoredby
followingtheselflessexamplehesetforallof
us.

Upon retirementin 2006, Karen and her
husbandEarl relocatedto Blue Ridge Sum-
mit,PA,where Karen cultivatednot only her
loveforgardeningbutalsoherloveoffamily,
cooking,and reading.Asamaster gardener,
she joined the local garden club and served
as presidentfrom 2013-14,during which
she plannedlocal landscapebeautification
projects.Through her bridge club,she devel-
oped new friendships.She remainedalong-
term memberin two book clubs,one in DC
andtheotherinPA.
Aswife,mother,sister,andgrandmother,she
was friend, mentor,and advisor,creating an
environmentin which all felt welcomed.As
Karen journeyedthroughlife,she touched
the lives of so many children,parents,and
co-workers.Her ripples of influencecan still
befeltthroughoutherextensivecommunity.

Karen Strimple,surroundedby many loved
ones,passed away on June 28, 2020. As
directorof St. Columba’sNursery School
in NorthwestWashington,DC,for 28 years,
Karen was passionateabout the importance
of early childhoodeducation,especiallyfor
theemotional,cognitive,physical,andsocial
developmentof three- to five-year-old chil-
dren. Karen’sbelief in preschoolas apow-
erful influenceon how childrenexperience
their worlds was ever presentin her work.
Joining the staff as amusic teacherin 1970,
Karen workedat St. Columba’suntil her
retirementin 2006.As director,Karen trans-
formedthe nurseryschool experiencefor
hundredsofWashingtonfamilies,pioneering
sensorymotor integration to anticipateand
mitigate students’ future learningchal-
lenges;incorporating extensive,all-weather
outdoorplaytime;integrating animalsinto
the learningprocess;and creatingan inclu-
sive environmentfor childrenwith all abili-
ties.
Throughher supportand encouragement,
Karen providedthe scaffoldingthat allowed
both teachersand studentsto take risks.
She fosteredcollaboration, team work, and
kindness.Karenwasknownforvisitingclass-
rooms with one of her beloved,bandanaed
Labrador retrieversin tow.Three dogs --
Luke,BrandyandCassidy–joinedKarenover
her tenure at the preschool,sportingtutus
for the annualHalloweenparade through
the local retirementhome.Some people
might rememberschool events inaugurated
by Karen like the end-of-yearTeddy Bear
picnic or Stone Soup,when childrenbrought
items for makingsoup to donate to acom-
munityorganization.
Karen’swork at St. Columba’swas part of
herroleintheWashington,DCareaEpiscopal
community.For many years she offered
parentingclassesand she consultedwith
