Yakaitis,whowereLithuanianimmigrantsliv-
inginAlbany,NYwherehewasbornand
raised.Hisparentsandoldersiblings,John,
Alice,andFrances,all predeceasedhis,asdid
niece,AliceJeanShinikMcMahon.
TheYakaitisfamilyweredevoutCatholicsand
Joeoftentoldthestoryofhismotherwho
becamepregnantwithhisatage45.Herdoctor
advisedhertogiveupthebaby,tellingherthat
shecoulddieinchildbirth.Sherefused.When
JoewasbornonMay22,1925,hisnextsibling
was 14 yearsolder.
Joe'slifewasfullofexcitement,intrigue,travel,
greatfoodanddrink,andmostofalllove.His
lifepartnerwasWashingtonarchitectArnold
Primawhopredeceasedhimin2016,following
a52yearrelationship.Joeworkedforfive
yearsfollowinghishighschoolgraduation,
savingmostofhisearningstoputhimself
throughSienaCollegeinAlbany,fromwhichhe
graduatedin1951.Followinggraduation,his
firstprofessionaljobwaswiththeCIA,where
heenjoyedan 11 yearcareer,includingforeign
assignments.HenextworkedintheWhite
HouseunderPresidentLyndonJohnson.For
therestofhisworkingcareer,heheldseveral
federalpositions.Joebecamearesidentof
WestPalmBeach,Floridain2001.Hecontin-
uedtospendsometimeinWashington,DC
wherehemaintainedalargecircleoffriends.

ofRochester,NY;andnephews,JamesChinik,

Dr.Stallingswas“green”longbeforethat
wasathing.In1995,hiszealforrecycling
earnedhimtheFallsChurchCityRecycling
Award.Godhelpyouif hefoundarecyclable

Anearlyproponentofphysicalfitness,Dr.
Stallingsenjoyedtennis,jogging,swimming,
hiking,andbiking.Helovedplayingcards,
initiallyforspendingmoneyasacollege
studentandlaterasafavoritepastimewith
hisgrandchildren,whoalsorelishedtime
withtheirGrampplayingcharades,scrabble,
andbeachfun.Bothgenerationsenriched
eachothers’livesbeyondmeasure.Dr.
Stallings’wisdomandhighsenseofvalues
willremainwiththemalways.
Dr.Stallingshadasenseofadventureand
endlesscuriosity.Exploringtheworldwith
hiswifewasoneofhismostfulfillingplea-
sures.
Hisasheswillbeinterredduringaprivate
militaryserviceinCrownsville,Maryland.
