Imposing and vulturesque, the greater
adjutant was once a common sight across
India and South-East Asia. Today, after
years of habitat loss and persecution, it is
the most endangered stork in the world –
just 1,200 cling on in the Indian states of
Assam and Bihar, with small numbers in
Cambodia. This is a wetland bird that both
hunts and scavenges but, edged out of its
natural home, it has had to adapt to life in
a human landscape. This is particularly
prevalent in Assam, where storks forage
at rubbish dumps and nest in villages.
