If their pace quartet for this match stay
fit and bowl as well as they did yester-
day in skittling Glamorgan for 131,
Somerset will have a strong chance of
reaching the Bob Willis Trophy final on
September 30. Craig Overton took a
five-wicket haul with some outstanding
bowling that would have caused severe
problems for batting line-ups much
stronger than Glamorgan’s gimcrack
top order.
More performances like this one will
enhance the chances of Overton, 26,
playing a part in the forthcoming Test
series against Pakistan, even though
competition for seamers’ spots is so
fierce. For this was high-class pace
bowling.
In an opening morning spell yester-
day of 8-1-17-4, Overton probed relent-
lessly, getting the ball to leave the bat
from an ideal length at a very lively pace
on a pitch with good carry.
Four of his victims were caught in the
slips after he had begun by having
Charlie Hemphrey well taken in the
gully. Indeed, Somerset’s catching was
exemplary with nothing dropped apart
from a difficult return chance to Josh
Davey, who bowled an excellent open-
ing spell of 6-3-9-2 in which he had
Nick Selman leg-before padding up and
Billy Root held at second slip.
Thanks to Overton and Davey,
Glamorgan lost six wickets in the first
hour and made it past the follow-on
target — increased from 150 to 200 in
this competition — only due to some
plucky batting from Graham Wagg (28)
and Kieran Bull (23). Wagg eventually

edged a beauty that Overton got
to lift off a length.
With Jack Brooks and Jamie
Overton — Craig’s twin brother
— as change bowlers, not forget-
ting Lewis Gregory when he
returns from England one-day
squad duty, Somerset have five
quality seamers at their disposal. It
was announced at the weekend,
however, that Jamie Overton would
join Surrey at the end of the season on
a three-year deal, and his departure
may come even sooner.
Financial considerations may lead
him to be loaned to the London club in
the next few weeks as Somerset may
have to repay a substantial amount of

the £1.1 million banked from members’
subscriptions in the spring. The club are
hoping many members will write them
off, but fear that about half will be
reclaimed.
The witheringly quick bowling by
Craig Overton, later replicated by
Glamorgan’s Marchant de Lange, was
witnessed by a dozen or so spectators
that not even the government could
stop watching. Residents in the apart-
ment block behind the Somerset Stand
had a good view from their balconies
and could hear the noisy banter
echoing from the middle.
By the end of the day, though,
Glamorgan’s fielders had gone quiet as
Somerset tightened their grip
on the match with some posi-
tive second-innings batting.
After Eddie Byrom and
Tom Lammondy had been dis-
missed inside the first 20 overs,
Tom Abell and James
Hildreth combined to put on
an unbeaten 93 in 18.4 overs.
Both will resume today with
a half-century in their sights.
Glamorgan were hampered
by a hamstring injury to
Ruaidhri Smith that
prevented him from
bowling yesterday.
Smith, who batted with a
runner, carted 23 in exactly
the same mode as Brooks,
coming in at No 11, had
done for Somerset
while crashing 72 off
58 balls on Saturday
evening. Brooks’s
assault had helped to
add a crucial 107
runs in only 15 overs
for the last wicket
with Steven Davies
(81) securing two
batting points for
Somerset
when none
looked likely.

Taunton (second day of four):
Somerset, with eight second-innings
wickets in hand, are 296 runs ahead of
Glamorgan

Leicestershire penalised as

who was born in South Africa but has
represented Germany in two T20 inter-
nationals, after the end of the match.
The incident occurred during the
North group match between Leicester-
shire and Lancashire, which is taking
place at New Road. Lamb, 24, hit the
ball firmly back towards Klein and was
hit on the ankle by a powerful return
throw from the bowler. Lamb dropped
his bat and hobbled towards square leg,

continued from back clearly in pain, and the on-fieldumpires, Nick Cook and Rob White,
awarded five runs to Lancashire.
Ben Slater, the Nottinghamshire
opening batsman who is on loan to
Leicestershire, scored an unbeaten
century and helped his side to 183 for
two at the close in reply to Lancashire’s
first-innings total of 322.
Also in the North group, the pace
bowler, Paul Coughlin, marked his
return to Durham after an unsuccessful
stint at Nottinghamshire with three
