Bournemouth have given themselves a
fortnight to find a new manager and
have received interest from Chris
Hughton and Lee Johnson.
Eddie Howe, 42, had been in charge
for nearly eight years in his second spell
at the Vitality Stadium and during his
time as manager guided the club from
League Two to the Premier League. He
left by mutual consent on Saturday six
days after they were relegated from the
top flight. Bournemouth are ideally
looking for a manager who is out of
work as it would make for a smoother
appointment before the start of pre-
season training on August 17.

Bournemouth may target Terry

Hughton, 61, has experience of
leading teams up from the Champion-
ship — Newcastle United in
2009-10 and Brighton & Hove
Albion three years ago. He
has been out of work since
leaving the latter in May

  1. Johnson, 39, was
    sacked by Bristol City
    last month after they fell
    out of contention for a
    Championship play-off
    place.
    Bournemouth are also
likely to show interest in Nigel
    Pearson, who was sacked as
Watford head coach with two matches
left. He led Leicester City to the top

flight in 2013-14 and then kept them up
the following season. Paul Cook, who
resigned from Wigan Athletic last
week, and John Terry, the
former Chelsea captain
who is an assistant to
Dean Smith at Aston
Villa, may be considered.
Howe’s assistant,
Jason Tindall, has been
put in interim charge of
Bournemouth, who say
there will be no fire sale of
players to offset a drop in
income through relegation.
They will make transfer funds
available to the new manager including
£41 million from the expected depar-

ture of Nathan Aké, the 25-year-old
central defender, to Manchester City.
Josh King and Callum Wilson, the
28-year-old forwards, are likely to be
sold. The futures of the midfielder Jef-
ferson Lerma, 25, the goalkeeper Aaron
Ramsdale, 22, and David Brooks, the
23-year-old midfielder, are uncertain.
6 Eddie Newton, the former Chelsea
midfielder, has been appointed head
coach at Trabzonspor. The 48-year-old
left Chelsea’s coaching staff to become
assistant manager of the Turkish club
in February and last month took
caretaker charge after the departure of
Huseyin Cimsir. He led Trabzonspor to
a 2-0 win over Alanyaspor in the
Turkish cup final on Wednesday.

Spurs keen on

Lille right back

Tottenham Hotspur face competition
from Everton for the Lille right back
Zeki Celik as they consider offloading
Serge Aurier.
Everton have opened talks with the
Ligue 1 side for the transfer of the
Turkey international, 23, who is valued
at about £18 million. However José
Mourinho, the Spurs head coach, is
keen on the defender. He would provide
him with a second option at right back,
a position which was important to the
tactical shape Mourinho deployed
upon taking over at Tottenham in
November, with the left back tucking in
to allow Aurier, 27 — the full back on
the opposite side — to bomb forward.
Alternatively, Celik’s purchase could
allow Spurs to explore the sale of Aurier
to AC Milan. Although he played more
Premier League minutes than any
Spurs player except Toby Alderweireld
last season, his unpredictability in
defensive areas proved costly at times
Everton’s pursuit of Celik runs along-
side their bid for Southampton’s Pierre-
Emile Hojbjerg, another Spurs target.

potential police action afterwards. The
FA’s document for referees states:
“Where the referee is certain that
someone deliberately, and from close
range, coughed into the face of an
opponent or match official... the
referee should take action under the
law 12, ‘using offensive, insulting or
abusive language and/or gestures’.”
In March, Atletico Madrid con-

he coughed towards members of the

side’s Champions League win over
Liverpool at Anfield.
Referees who are not part of the
Covid-19 testing programme must take
their temperature at home within five
hours of the match starting; have their
fees paid into a bank account; travel to
games separately; and not handle the
match ball before kick-off. Assistant
referees must wear facemasks when
checking players’ boots and shin pads.
